Course outline
The course emphasises the importance of independent learning and self-directed research, exploration, and experimentation. Art is not only for students who wish to pursue a career in the artistic industry, it will allow you to develop transferable skills such as problem solving, contextual thinking, analysis and greater visual literacy. Students are required to work in one or more area(s) of Fine art such as drawing and painting, mixed media and printmaking.
Course content
AQA Art and Design Fine Art, (7202)
The course starts with a foundation studies programme designed to give students the perfect transition from GCSE to A-Level. The course develops analytical, technical, and expressive skills that supports the student driven personal investigation, producing a practical portfolio which provides evidence of a sustained investigation. The focus of the investigation must be identified independently by the student and must lead to a finished outcome or a series of related finished outcomes, there is an emphasis on the practical making of artwork. There is a separate compulsory written element to the coursework which should relate to the specialism being studied (1500-3000 words.)
In the second year of study students will receive a question paper which will consist of a choice of eight questions to be used as starting points for their externally set assignment. Students will prepare their preparatory work from the 1st February before completing their finished outcome or a series of related finished outcomes, informed by their preparatory work in the 15 hour supervised assessment.

Future opportunities
The course is a valuable starting point for students considering a career within the creative industries and will promote analytical and lateral thinking in addition to practical skills contributing towards a balanced programme of study. However, some students who follow this course may not intend to pursue such a career, Art compliments a broader range of subjects such as STEM learning or to compliment more traditionally academic choices.
Art and Design develops skills and character necessary for many careers in the creative industries and desirable in careers outside the arts. It is worth noting that many employers and Universities increasingly value creative thinking skills. Most students go on to Foundation Courses and identify focused areas of specialisation in Design or the Fine Arts leading to degrees and/or vocational qualifications.
