Computer Science A level
I have a degree in Computer Science and over a decade of teaching experience behind me. Choosing to study A level Computer Science can open doors to various career opportunities in data science, web development, product management and software development.

Component 1
- The characteristics of contemporary processors, input, output and storage devices
- Software and software development
- Exchanging data
- Data types, data structures and algorithms
- Legal, moral, cultural and ethical issues
Component 2
- Elements of computational thinking
- Problem solving and programming
- Algorithms to solve problems and standard algorithms
Component 3: Programming project
The learner will choose a computing problem to work through according to the guidance in the specification.

Component 1 – Computer systems.
Assessment type: Externally marked exam
Weighing: 40% of the A Level. Duration: 2 hr 30 min written exam
Marks: 140
Component 2 – Algorithms and Programming
Assessment type: Externally marked exam
Weighing: 40% of the A Level. Duration: 2 hr 30 min written exam
Marks: 140
Component 3 – Programming Project 20% of the A Level Coursework
Assessment type: Internally marked and externally moderated project
Weighing: 20% of the A Level
Marks: 70
Future opportunities
This qualification is suitable for learners intending to pursue any career in which an understanding of technology is needed. The qualification is also suitable to prepare you for higher education at university.
It will provide learners with a range of transferable skills which will facilitate personal growth and foster cross curriculum links in areas such as maths, science and design and technology. Computer Science is a very creative subject and skills such as problem solving and analytical thinking will all be refined and explored as learners progress through the learning and assessment programme.
