Maths
In years 7-10 mathematics at KWS, students follow the White Rose Maths curriculum. This has been carefully designed by a group of experts to support the best practice teaching of the national curriculum.
We chose to follow this particular mastery curriculum for multiple reasons; one of which is that it is used and followed in nearly 90% of primary schools, so the transition from KS2 to KS3 is easier for the majority of students.
Our Intent
- Increase student confidence and fluency through mixed ability teaching using scaffolded small steps.
- Create knowledge rich students through carefully sequenced recall tasks, homeworks and knowledge organisers.
- Embed desirable difficulties into our pedagogy to enable students to confidently reason their answers, problem solve and make links between the key strands of mathematics.
- Encourage a love of learning of maths and therefore a curiosity for the subject beyond the classroom.
- Support students to achieve their best grades at KS4.
The key strands of mathematics covered in Maths are:
- Number
- Ratio & proportion
- Algebra
- Shape & measure
- Data
The curriculum’s intent is to develop mathematical thinking through these topic strands; it takes careful and purposeful consideration in the sequencing of the topics through KS3 and KS4. This curriculum is ambitious and designed to give children, particularly those taught in mixed ability, the knowledge, self-belief and cultural capital they need to succeed in life.
The premise of a mastery curriculum is for students to “go slow to go fast”. This phrase underpins the curriculum intent of mathematical thinking, representations, variation and fluency which are taught and embed through small steps teaching. These support teachers to present the subject matter clearly, promote appropriate discussion, reasoning and problem solving alongside abstract representations to support all learners; simultaneously developing mathematical talk through oracy.
In year 7 mathematics, students are taught four lessons a week in mixed ability groups.
The key strands of mathematics covered in year 7 are:
- Number
- Algebra
- Shape & measure
- Data
The year 7 curriculum also allows for students to start to build their proficiency in using basic mathematical equipment such as a ruler, protractor and a scientific calculator.
