KWS Wrap Bar

March 4, 2022/in Whole School/by Dean Inns

This week has seen the launch of the KWS Wrap Bar in association with Theo’s. Tuesday saw students handed samples which went down a treat! The Wrap Bar then formally launched on Wednesday and feedback from staff and students who have tried one has been fantastic. The wrap bar is currently limited to one year group per day whilst we get used to operating it but we hope to scale up to have it open to the whole school every day by Easter.

Sports Update

March 4, 2022/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks
Both our Year 7 boys’ squad and a group of Year 7/8 girls headed to the Saracens Stone X Stadium for a rugby tournament. The girls enjoyed training with some of Saracens ladies team members at the beginning, then it was straight into mixed team matches where Ellie H and Isabella H enjoyed their first taste of contact rugby. The boys were very successful, winning 3 out of 3 games and only conceding 1 try in the process. All boys played well and it was difficult to pick one stand out player. However, special mentions must go to Ethan A for a couple of last minute try saving tackles, Jesse G and Will R seemed to be involved in every attack and Tommy and Charlie S for stepping in and throwing their bodies on the line in defence and at the breakdown. As a result of this, the following students have made it into the Saracens Pathway programme:
Ethan A
Oscar C
Harry O’B
Will R
Thomas R
Jesse G
All three year groups have boys’ football fixtures coming thick and fast. Year 9 in particular had a very impressive performance on Saturday against Simon Balle School, making competition for places fierce moving forward! Special mention to Nishaan for scoring twice from centre back in a commanding performance, but the whole squad played their part. We look forward to a weekend of fixtures against SJL, as well as two football tournaments for the girls in the middle of March.
Lastly, a student from school and her brother are campaigning to help save Harpenden’s squash courts. There is also an open day on Saturday for anyone interested – please find attached the poster to help support the campaign.

Netball Update

March 4, 2022/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

This week our Year 7 and Year 9 netball teams played against Marlborough School.

Both teams scored highly and played well in defence to keep the scores close.

Year 9 were victorious with Year 7 narrowly missing out on the win.

Well done to all who played in the cold and rain!

A Midsummer Night’s Dream Shakespeare Performance by Anthony Glenn

March 4, 2022/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick
Our Year 7’s were delighted to have a visit from Anthony Glenn yesterday. He came in to deliver his version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream to help prepare them for their next unit of study.
Both students and staff had a great time watching him and getting involved!
There was an appearance from a boy band fit to rival One Direction…but other than that, we felt the story was just as Shakespeare had intended!
A special well done to Year 7 who participated beautifully as a year group. I think we are due some stunning performances from this lot in years to come!

Travel Plan – Zonal Map Reminder

February 11, 2022/in Whole School/by Dean Inns

As you will be aware from previous communications – KWS operates a travel plan and as part of this we encourage parents strongly to pick up/drop off a 5-10 minute walk away from school to help the enviroment and also encourage students to be active and healthy. The School Car Park should not be used for pick up/drop off unless you have been issued with a KWS Parking Permit from the school due to an exceptional need such as as a medical issue. These are renewed on a termly basis as we only have a limited amount of parking available on site. The Senior Leadership Team will be checking all cars coming on site after half term have the appropriate permit.

Please Click Here to see the zonal map and ensure you are picking up/dropping off your child a 5-10 minute walk away from the school. We ask that when parking in neighbouring roads a 5-10 minute walk away that you park respectfully not obstructing access to a driveway and ensure your engine is switch off whilst waiting.

Students have had a great half term of netball playing in fixtures against Sir John Lawes and STAGS.

All students who have taken part worked well as a team and put in some great scores.

Celebrating the Year of The Tiger

February 10, 2022/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick

To celebrate the Year of the Tiger, KWS students have been making dumplings and paper cutting.

Dumpling is a symbol of wealth for its shape like ancient Chinese gold money; paper cutting is a symbol of luck and happiness and parents in China put money into the red envelopes for their children. Thank you to Mrs Freeman for all her help in the food tech room. We wish everyone:

Xin nian kuai le, Happy new year!
Gong xi fa cai, Congratulations and may you be prosperous!
Thank you

The Eco-committee contribute to HCL Catering consultation

February 10, 2022/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick
A group of 18 students across Years 7-9 took part in a focus group this week about the future of school food.
It was fascinating for students to see how their opinion as ‘customers’ can impact on the strategy of a regional catering company.
We had wide-ranging discussions about the importance of recyclable food packaging, food miles, the impact on the climate, as well as the importance of variety and value for money.
Thank you to all for taking part and contributing to a more sustainable future for food in schools.
