September 30, 2022/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick
As we enter the ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ here are a few pictures from the KWS Eco-Garden. Our teams of student gardeners are, quite rightly, very proud of all their hard work.

Rugby Season Update

September 16, 2022/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick

This is just a request for any parents that would be willing to support with the running of rugby in school. Moving forward, training and matches will be on Saturday mornings, so support would be needed then.

If you are interested in helping, please email Mr Alexander at j.alexander@kwschool.co.uk.

Celebrating Success

September 16, 2022/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick
At KWS, we have a weekly whole school celebration assembly where student achievement is recognised. We, of course, have ample reasons to celebrate our students’ achievements within school, but we would also love to be able to recognise where students have accomplished success outside of school, whether this be sporting, artistic or within any other sector.
Therefore, if your child has achieved something outside of school, please communicate this with their form tutor so that we may share the great news in our weekly celebration assemblies.
We look forward to being able to extend our praise in the coming weeks!

September 16, 2022/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick
 Top marks at GCSE!

We are very proud of  Annabel S and Samuel J- B who both achieved Grade 9 in their Spanish GCSE this year.  The students who were in year 9 and year 8 respectively did extremely well to achieve the top grade at such a young age.

Attendance Review and Absence Reporting

September 16, 2022/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick

As a school, we place great importance on attendance and expect that all our students will achieve an attendance level of at least 96% each academic year.

It is through good attendance that students maximise their full potential, enhancing their life chances for the future. Missing school means missing out on learning and this can have an impact on a child’s development and attainment.

There is a strong statistical link between attendance and attainment. Studies show that students who have patterns of poor school attendance could fail to achieve their full potential and this can have a detrimental  impact on their GCSE results.

Parents have a legal responsibility to ensure their child attends school regularly and punctually.

We review attendance regularly and have an attendance procedure we follow based on each student’s attendance percentage. The process begins once a student reaches less than 96% attendance.

We strongly urge parents/carers to avoid booking holidays during term time. We appreciate there may be exceptional circumstances behind a request for leave. If this is the case, you should give a detailed explanation as to why it is necessary for you to take your child out of school by completing this form and sending it to absence@kwschool.co.uk where it will be forwarded to Mr Smith for his consideration.

If you feel you would like support with your child’s attendance or wellbeing, please do not hesitate to contact the school. Since opening in September 2019, we have supported a number of students whose circumstances, special educational needs or mental health have impacted their attendance.

We like to work with children and families on an individualised basis and have had success in supporting a number of students to improve their attendance in challenging circumstances.

Absence Reporting

If your child is unable to attend school due to illness, urgent appointments or other
reasons please telephone the 24hr school absence line on 01582 314800 or
email absence@kwschool.co.uk by 8.30am at the latest, on the first day of
absence and every subsequent day thereafter

● Please provide your child’s name and tutor group
● Please give as much detail as possible for the reason of absence avoiding using
terms such as ‘unwell’ or ‘under the weather’
● If you fail to contact the school to inform us of your child’s absence, this may
be referred to our safeguarding team

Where possible, please give plenty of notice for any planned absence, for example
hospital appointments, and provide a copy of any medical/dental appointment
letters/cards to the school. We would appreciate all dental and non-urgent doctor
appointments being made out of school hours.

Sports Day Update

July 21, 2022/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick

Friday 15th July provided an opportunity for students from all year groups to participate in a range of sporting activities during Sports Day. The morning session allowed students to circulate around 15 different events and collect points individually and also for their House. Students engaged fantastically well throughout and there were so many that showed the best of themselves, not only in their performance levels, but also their willingness to try their best and participate in as many events as they could.

The afternoon was Finals Afternoon, which involved the finals of the Tug of War Competition as well as races in the 100m, 200m, 800m and the mixed relay for each year group (including some wildcard staff entries for the Year 9 race!).

Reading Challenge Success

July 21, 2022/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

In the English Department, our annual Reading Challenges have come to an end. Congratulations to all students who have embraced the Friday Reads lessons, our wonderful Library and our wonderful Librarian along the way to succeed in reading a book a month this year. This year 160 of our students completed their reading challenge and 2943 books were read across all three year groups as part of the challenge, but special mention must go to our exceptional readers: Leigha K, Joanne E, Mollie S, Alexandra H, Joel D and Grace O for reading 175 books between them during the course of the year!!! A full list of those who successfully completed their reading challenge is below (apologies if we have missed anyone!). Please congratulate them all and encourage all students to keep reading over the Summer break – studies have shown that it is a vital part of being able to hit the ground running in September. After all, as Dr Seuss says, “The more you read the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

Mrs McPartlin.
