Period 7
Period 7 is a key aspect of our Super Curriculum, it runs from 3 until 3.30pm Monday to Thursday at KWS and is a compulsory part of the school day. It allows our students to find and develop a range of personal interests, across the categories of mind, body and soul.
All students in Year 7 to 9 select and partake in one mind, one body and one soul activity each week for a block of 8 or 9 weeks. Over the academic year they partake in four of these 8 week blocks, so get to experience 12 activities each year. Their remaining period 7 session on a Thursday each week is focused on Independent Study, supported by their form tutor.
In year 10 students drop down to two electives, keep one Independent study session and complete ‘Community and Study Skills’ once a week which covers a Community Project, focused on improving their study skills and various careers focused activities.
In Year 11 students have more time for independent study and subject specific intervention, but keep one elective session a week.
Our period 7 offer over our first four years has included:
Period 7 this academic year
There are four blocks of period 7 across the year, each of which is 8 or 9 weeks long.
Students select their period 7 options at two points in the year: early Sept and end Jan.
Students sign up for lunchtime clubs at the same time – giving them a great opportunity to select from the combined offer, which is a very wide and varied range of activities.
Performing arts rehearsals run alongside period 7 and clubs – with auditions held as required for our various productions across the year.
Sports squads run as part of our Body options and they often continue past 3.30pm to allow more time to train and prepare for fixtures. Squads are selected by staff following trials and places in them are fluid (both into and out of them) based on behaviour in school and sports performance.
Options for the first half of 2023/24 are outlined in the PDFs below.
