“Beyond Year 11” Drop Down Day

November 17, 2023/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick
On the “Beyond Year 11” drop down day, we had lots of great opportunities to have sessions with different colleges, universities and companies offering apprenticeships, to look at careers and education opportunities post-16.
Firstly, my form had a speaker from Parker Hannifin (Gail Anthony), a manufacturing company, who talked to us about how their creations were used all around the world and what an apprenticeship would look like with them.
Next, we had Sarah Wigmore from Oaklands College presenting their different courses and a plumber, Darren Manning, talking about his own job teaching there.
This was followed by Renee Ramsay-Nicol from Computacentre who gave us an engaging task of creating an internet-safety TikTok video in a small group.
Another talk was from was Alison Moore from the University of Hertfordshire, who talked to us about university life and the benefits of going to university.
We also had Nick Baker and Charlotte Jones from Compco Fire Systems, who gave us a small talk about what they did and then a practical task of solving a problem and identifying possible risks, dressing one team member up in a builder’s uniform!
Lastly, we had a presentation from Mr. Laing, who talked to us about all the plans for our Sixth Form. He showed us all the possible courses and what differences and privileges there would be for us there.
Overall, it was an extremely engaging and interactive day that made me think deeper about what I wanted to do  post-16, and helped me get a clearer idea of possible choices for the future.

Diwali at KWS

November 17, 2023/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick

This last week we have had an array of activities to mark Diwali at KWS including the very popular (and what has now become annual) event of Rangoli. Students really enjoyed themselves using the decorative sand to make traditional patterns one lunchtime while listening to some traditional music chosen by older students who celebrate Diwali at home as well. A big thank you to Miss Tailor for helping facilitate this.

Using the theme of “Being the Light” at KWS, I composed some form time activities looking at opportunities for students to “be the light” at school and across their communities in varying situations; doing the right thing, speaking up for others, helping and being positive in what can sometimes be difficult situations. We also looked at how Diwali is celebrated by not just Hindus but also by Sikhs and Jains as well, and explored each of the celebratory reasons.

As well as this, we were treated to some beautiful decorations in the dining hall where HCC laid on a Diwali inspired menu and students enjoyed a film from the Indian Film Industry looking at one man’s journey looking deep within his own identity and outlook in life. Thank you Mrs P Kaur for organising this.

Students were also able to access an array of inspiring literature by Indian authors touching on the theme of “being the light.” in the library this week. Thank you to the library staff for organising this as the students really enjoyed this.

I hope all of our families who have been celebrating Diwali over the weekend have had a fantastic time with their loved ones. It’s been lovely hearing about it from the students and I shall leave you with some photos of our week of celebrating Diwali at KWS.

3G Pitch Update – November 2023

November 16, 2023/in News, Whole School/by Dean Inns

I am pleased to say that our 3G pitch is progressing well and we are on track for the pitch opening in January 2024. The fence posts are now up and the lighting columns are currently going up. The final stage which is the carpet being laid is likely to take place over the next couple of weeks. Wheathampsted Wanderers our partner club are gearing up to start using the pitch from January.

The pitch will be available for students to use during PE lessons, we hope to also make it available at Lunchtime when clubs/training are not taking place. It will be a fantastic resource for our PE department and the local community.

Students will need to Use round plastic-studded footwear only (no metal studs) to be allowed on the 3G Pitch. The footwear policy will be enforced at all times to prolong the life of the surface.

Library Update

November 3, 2023/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

We have had a busy time as usual in the library! In the week before half term, we held a lunchtime listening party based on Jeffrey Boakye’s book Musical Truth: A Musical Journey through Modern Black Britain. From songs sung as people landed in England on HMT Empire Windrush, through the R&B inspired pop of the 1960s and ending with Stormzy, it was wonderful to learn about and celebrate the musical history of black Britain with the 40 students who joined us.

We have also just published our half termly Book-ish magazine. This magazine is prepared by students at one of our lunchtime clubs and is a wonderful celebration of all things KWS library! You can find it here

Anti-Bullying Week

November 3, 2023/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks
We are excited to inform you about our upcoming Anti-Bullying Week events, which will be taking place at KWS from Monday 13th to Friday 17th November. This event is part of our ongoing commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all students.
Theme: This year’s theme is “Make a noise about bullying”. The theme has been chosen to highlight the importance of speaking up and out about bullying.

Each year group will have an assembly on the importance of kindness, respect and highlighting how to prevent bullying at KWS. We believe that by raising awareness and fostering a culture of respect, we can make a significant impact in reducing bullying in our school community. Your support and student participation are crucial to the success of this event.

Participation in any of the events throughout the week, will result in students receiving a handful of recognitions/ house points. Competitions winners and runners up will also receive extra points and prizes.
Thank you for being partners in our efforts to create a safe and inclusive school environment. If you have any questions or need further information about Anti-Bullying Week, please do not hesitate to contact myself at t.patterson@kwschool.co.uk
Please see our poster below with key details of whats on in Anti-Bullying Week:
Together, we can make a difference in the lives of our students and promote kindness, empathy, and understanding.

Please note if students are not participating in the odd tie section of the events they must wear their school tie as normal. Students wearing PE kit are able to wear an odd tie with this uniform.

Black History Month at KWS

November 3, 2023/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

The last few weeks have seen our students and staff take part in a variety of activities around the school to absorb the stories of Black women in particular during Black History Month. As well as assemblies for each year group discussing the theme of ‘Saluting our Sisters’, our students were invited to taste foods from the African-Caribbean cuisine while watching a thought-provoking TV series discussing themes including identity, class and growing up as an African-American. On one of the lunchtimes, with the help of Miss Hammond and Mr Blankson-Hemans, our student helpers serve traditionally-cooked African plantain with various topping options for the students to sample while discussing the themes raised in the viewing.

The Art department held an activity where they used inspiration from West African Adrinka symbols painted onto our seating under the canopy in the courtyard. These symbols are visual representations of proverbs with significant historical and philosophical meanings representing qualities such as hard work, unity in diversity, friendship and high standards. These are all qualities as a school that we aim at strenghtening within ourselves and tie in perfectly with the KWS values. Attached are pictures showing the art leaders hard at work.

As well as this, the Library held a “Listening Party” one lunchtime to over 50 students who went through a musical journey looking at the contributions by Black artists towards the British music scene and how music changed on the British landscape with these contributions based on happenings within politics and much more – this was an eye-opening event for me personally as I often hear these songs not knowing the landscape in which they rose from and the challenges attached to them.

The History department held a House competition to all students where they chose which minoritised ethnic group figure in History they would like to learn about. The  runners up with 50 house points were: Isabelle S 7A, Shona E 9F and Shakhram S 11K. The winner with 100 house points was Florence C 9K. Well done, all!

It’s been a pleasure organising my first Black History Month at KWS and it has been a learning opportunity for myself and students, specifically when it comes to the contributions made across the fields of Business, Engineering, the Arts and politics by Black women to create a more cultivated society for us all. With the school’s focus currently on Remembrance Day, I am preparing for our Diwali Celebrations next week which I look forward to sharing with everyone.

Spanish Trip

November 3, 2023/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

¡Hola!

In Spain, we took part in a series of activities to help improve and add to our Spanish vocabulary set. On the first day, we arrived in Águilas very late at night, had dinner and went to our dorm rooms.

On the second and third day, we took part in watersports, including paddle boarding, big surf, scuba diving and kayaking. On the third day we also did some Spanish dancing as well as learning how to cook bolitas, a Spanish sweet dish of potato covered in chocolate. The entire recipe was in Spanish! On the 4th day, we went to the Spanish city of Cartagena, a Spanish roman city. There we had the opportunity to buy some souvenirs in the market, as well as being given the opportunity to explore las calles de Cartagena (the streets of Cartagena).

We also went to a museum with the first ever submarine! On the 5th day, we stayed local and went to the centre of the town we were staying in, Águilas, one of the last Arab cities in Spain. We climbed up the largest hill in the town up to the castle, overlooking the town and the sea. What incredible views! We also had the opportunity to explore las calles de Águilas (the streets of Águilas), to buy some more souvenirs if we wanted to.

On the last day, we had a photo race, in which we had to go around the area surrounding our hostel, take pictures of certain monuments or certain poses, and race back to the monitores. The checklist was in Spanish. After this we took one last trip to the beach, packed our belongings and said goodbye to the monitores, and drove back to Alicante-Elche airport to fly back home.

In my opinion, the trip was definitely worthwhile for Spanish as we were given opportunities to speak Spanish everywhere we went, from the town centres to within the hostels. As well as this the monitores and teachers also assisted us at every turn when we wanted to know a particular phrase in Spanish or just a general fact about Spain!
