KWS End of Year Exams

May 20, 2022/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick

Students in Year 7 – 9 will be sitting end of year exams during our exam week Monday 20th June – Friday 24th June. These exams are an opportunity to consolidate knowledge gained throughout the year, practise revision skills, to identify gaps in learning, to show progress in subjects and to experience sitting exams in large groups.

Exam week timetables have been shared with students via their Form’s Google Classroom.

Students have had an assembly from Mr Martin regarding end of year exams, how to prepare and how to look after themselves during this period. We have also produced a KWS Revision guide to support how best to revise. We recommend parents and carers to review these documents with their child.

Preparing for exams Assembly – Students.pdf

KWS revision guide.pdf

Here at Katherine Warington School we try to teach students that revision must be active to be efficient. Many students incorrectly assume that revision means reading through their exercise book or textbook once or twice and that this will be sufficient to remember and understand the detail. Students are currently having a number of Form sessions reviewing the science of revision. Mr Inman has delivered the first session, relating to creating a revision timetable, and his Loom video is available for all to watch Revision Guidance – Step 1

Specific information regarding the content of exams and how students can best prepare for these will be available from individual subject areas in advance of each exam. Staff are only too happy to help with any issues and we recommend students talk to their Teachers, Form Tutor, Head Of Year or the Pastoral Team if they need any support or advice.

Enjoy revising!

PE Update

May 20, 2022/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick
Cricket:
Our Year 9 cricket team faced a competitive Beaumont side in the district cup. Unfortunately we came up short by 24 runs, chasing down 123. Special mention to Joe L (30) and Ben W who steadied the ship after a loss of early wickets, and in doing so made the game competitive.
Following that on Tuesday, a nail biting evening of cricket saw our Year 8 cricket team fall agonisingly 5 runs short, chasing down 127 against SJL, needing a six off the last ball. Impressive performances by Haider for some excellent bowling and Callum and Marco for some cleaning hitting with the bat. Well done though to all involved.
Athletics:
Our Year 8 athletics squad had their first fixture competing against other schools, many representing the school for the first time in their chosen event. All competed well and more than held their own. Jessica H managed to get another new PB in the high jump to win the competition, Daniel F won the 800m, Oliver S came second in the 300m and Maisie R came second in the 200m.

Anti-Idling Campaign

May 11, 2022/in Whole School/by Dean Inns

Our students this week were fortunate enough to work with Living Streets on an ‘Anti-Idling’ Campaign and also a ‘Walking Map’ to identify locations within our 5-10 minute walking zone where students can be dropped off and walk to school.

Katherine Warington School needs better Air!

The reason why Katherine Warington School needs cleaner air is because students, the workers of tomorrow, need clean lungs to be successful and highly academic.

Do you know what idling is?

Well, the chances are you do this nearly EVERY day! Idling is when your car is still, whilst the engine is on.

This affects the air because the carbon gases that are produced are greenhouse gases, negatively affecting the environment. The gases are trapped in the Ozone layer for so long that it starts to deteriorate, allowing the Sun’s radiation to get through to us, eventually killing us all.  Without the Ozone layer, we could end up like Mars, a barren planet with no surface life, and only fossils to show for us. If this future scares you help us in our mission to keep safe.

Experts speculate that climate change will be dangerous to us in the next 50 years! This doesn’t just affect your grandchildren, but you too!

So in the end, we at Katherine Warington School, have one request, just don’t idle!

PE Update

May 6, 2022/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick

It was fantastic to be back on the track (and field) for our first athletics meet of the season. All students who participated hopefully gained a lot from it – whether they had experience of it last year, or this was their first experience. Special mention to Nathan T (triple jump), Olivia W (javelin), and Lexi F (long jump) for winning their respective events, as well as Jessica H (high jump) beating her personal best by a whopping 13cm and finishing joint second! Well done to all involved and we look forward to the remainder of the season.

In conjunction with the KWS library staff, we have sourced a number of PRE related fiction books. If you love reading, speak to a member of staff in the Library to check out these titles. We have a mixture of classics and newer novels, and all link in some way to either morality, faith, identity or the idea of belonging.

Year 7 & Year 8 Team Maths Challenges

May 6, 2022/in Year 7/by Chrissy Dicks
KWS were well represented in the Herts for Learning Maths Challenge for Year 8 on Tuesday 26th April with two teams. Both teams worked collaboratively to solve problem and challenge themselves to answer the tricky questions and tasks at hand. Well done to Ollie T, Lucas C, Anwitha M, Lina B, John D, Dylan T, Jessica H and Hannah W for all of their fantastic efforts! Even though they did not place high enough to reach the final, they competed to a very high level.
On Wednesday 4th May we had the great honour of taking one of our Year 7 teams to compete in the Herts for Learning Maths Challenge Final at Marriot’s school in Stevenage.  Huge congratulations to Mia K, Arabella D, Bertie R & Henry G who competed brilliantly, showing excellent team work and mathematics skills, achieving a very commendable 6th Place. That’s 6th out of the 72 schools that competed across Hertfordshire in the heats and the 16 who qualified for the final – amazing work!
In the words of Mia: “The maths challenge was so fun yet also very nerve racking! My favourite part was probably the memory round as it included so many fun sections we had to remember. It was quite tense at some points when the answers were being read out as you got to see what you did right and what you messed up on. We found some of the questions more fun than others. For example, there was a question where you had to make 8 different shapes with a area of 2cm², it was very fun and interesting to see what shapes could be made just with such a small space! I was very proud when we got 6th place and have made a lot of fun memories that I wont be forgetting any time soon.”
