UK Mathematics Trust Maths Challenge

Well done to all 72 Year 9 and Year 10 students who competed in the UK Mathematics Trust Intermediate Maths Challenge on Thursday 2nd February.

This challenge is designed to test student’s mathematical ability through problem solving and the challenge is taken by some of KWS’s top mathematicians.

We would like to congratulate the following students who achieved a bronze award – Lucas C (Y9), Jack F (Y9), Ruairi A (Y10), Mia T (Y9), Umar-Farooq S (Y10), Alina C (Y9), John D (Y9), Harry H (Y10), Maanasee N (Y10), Tristan H (Y10), Rayan H (Y10), Hannah W (Y9), Jai B (Y9), Daniel F (Y9), Oliver Sh (Y9), Veer Sher S (Y9), Ethan S (Y10), Lola T (Y9), Alex C (Y10), Evan W (Y10), Rayan P (Y10) and Walt R (Y10).

We would like to congratulate the following students who achieved a silver award – Alexander M (Y9), Joanne E (Y10), Dylan T (Y9), Jessica H (Y9), Becky D (Y10), Ben W (Y10) and Freddie C (Y10).

We would like to congratulate the following two students who achieved a gold award and will be competing in follow on rounds against other students all over the country – Oliver G (Y10) and Marco R (Y9).

Well done to all students who took part and we look forward to competing in the Junior Maths Challenge with our Year 7 and 8 mathematicians in April.

Elevate Education Seminar: Time Management

On the first day back from the half term break, the Year 10’s were visited by Elevate Education as
part of a Time Management seminar. The presenter discussed their GCSE experiences and passed
their wisdom on to our current Year 10’s in preparations for the upcoming mock examinations.

All Year 10’s were provided with a helpful Time Management booklet outlining some of the key
aspects of Time Management and how they can enhance their revision experience. They discussed
planning their study timetables and the positive effects of study groups, rather than individual
revision. The students will continue to explore some of these ideas in their upcoming study skills
sessions.

Children’s Mental Health Week 6th Feb – 10th Feb

During Children’s Mental Health Week (Monday 6th to the 10th of February), we celebrated the theme of “Let’s Connect.” Throughout the week we ran various activities designed to encourage our students and staff to explore the ways we can make meaningful connections in support of our mental health.

All students explored these ideas in both form time and PSHE lessons during the week.

Science:

In Science lessons teachers explained more about the science behind connection. Students were asked to consider why it is so good for our brains to create positive relationships with others. There is a science behind being kind!

Chain of Connection:

In the Library, students contributed to a paper chain of positive connection. Students wrote down positive interactions they had throughout the week to help make our paper chain as long as possible. It is currently displayed in our Library.

Connection Cards:

Every student was given a Connection Card and was challenged to make as many positive connections as possible. We are proud to say that we saw students around the school making efforts to do some of these tasks and 171 students entered themselves into our draw.

Nightingale achieved the most house points (100 points) for entering the highest number of cards, Tesla (75 points) and Franklin (50 points).

Well done to all who took part.

Finally, congratulations to Rebecca R in Year 8 for winning the self care products advertised at the beginning of the week!

Year 7 Shaking Up Shakespeare Performance on Thursday

Katherine Warington School English Department welcomed Anthony Glenn’s Shaking Up Shakespeare on Thursday morning this week to perform his one man show of A Midsummer Night’s Dream to Year 7.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a 16th century romantic comedy that is all about how “the course of true love never did run smooth”. We had a couple of lessons to help us to understand the very complicated plot and the large numbers of characters involved in the play and then sat back in awe to watch one, very energetic, man perform the whole thing, with lots of audience participation and enthusiastic volunteer helpers. Special mention to those who played the parts of Hermia, Lysander, Demetrius, Puck, the Changeling boy, Titania, the Mechanicals and the definitely necessary boy band. Particular mention must go to Daniel H (7Ke) for his excellent portrayal of Thisbe.

We will be studying A Midsummer Night’s Dream after the Easter holidays. We hope your young people enjoyed it!

Careers Month

At KWS, we have rebranded the month of March as “Careers Month”, during which every student will receive at least one lesson per subject that has some form of careers focus. It is hoped that this will provide students with knowledge about where each of their academic subjects could take them, in terms of their future pathways. We have lots of exciting activities across the range of subjects, including visitors, a governmental decision making exercise and some teachers delivering from the ‘My Learning, My Future’ resources.

During this month, all staff are also encouraged to share their career journeys, the skills they have developed and a piece of advice for students when trying to decide their future pathways. Students will see posters on classroom and office doors outlining this information and it is hoped that this will encourage curiosity from students and result in more conversations about careers taking place. I wonder if students will discover which of our staff members used to work at a trampoline park?

You too are able to use this opportunity to have “careers conversations” with your child. The Unifrog tool, which all students have access to, has some very useful resources to support this, including some psychometric tests that can be completed. These tests then generate ideas for future careers, based on the answers that the students have given. We have set up a parent login so that you can use Unifrog as if you were a student yourself, allowing you to support your child throughout the process.
