Sports Update

June 24, 2022/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick

There have been numerous sporting events over the last few weeks.

We had an enjoyable and insightful day with our Year 9 GCSE PE group at The University of Hertfordshire. We got to use their sports science lab, as well as some testing equipment typically used by professional athletes. It hopefully also gave students an insight into studying a sport course in the future and experiencing what student accommodation is like too.

In cricket, Year 7 gave an excellent performance, progressing through to the next round of the district cup. The boys bowled well and after a slow but disciplined batting start, Bertie came in to assist Billy and hit the ball very cleanly to see the team through. This represents the first KWS cricket win in our very short history!

Over the last few weeks, we have been holding an internal tennis tournament for each year group. Congratulations to Tim B in Year 7, Jai B in Year 8 and Toby B in Year 9 for winning the school tennis tournament in their respective year groups. Clearly there is something in having a surname beginning with B at KWS!

Finally, our summer fixtures concluded with the All Day Athletics Championships last week at Woodside Athletics Track in Garston. There were a number of stand out out performances with a number of personal bests being smashed in the process. Especially notable performances were from Isla McD and Ollie T in Year 8 for trying the hurdles for the first time and showing great resilience – a very tough event indeed. Also, Belle W for representing Year 9 in both the 1500m and the high jump despite being in Year 8.

Well done also to the medal winners: silver medals for Olivia W in the javelin, Jessica H in the high jump, Nathan T in the triple jump and then bronze medals for Oscar Ch in the javelin and George P in the 1500m.

KWS End of Year Exams

June 10, 2022/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick

Students in Years 7 – 9 will be sitting end of year exams during our exam week Monday 20th June – Friday 24th June. These exams are an opportunity; to consolidate knowledge gained throughout the year, practise revision skills, to identify gaps in learning, to show progress in subjects and to experience sitting exams in large groups.

Exam week timetables, assembly slides on how to prepare for exams and a revision guide have all been previously shared with students via their Form’s Google Classroom and parents via email.

Here at Katherine Warington School we try to teach students that revision must be active to be efficient. Many students incorrectly assume that revision means reading through their exercise book or textbook once or twice and that this will be sufficient to remember and understand the details. Students are currently having a number of Form sessions reviewing the science of revision. Mr Inman has delivered three sessions and his Loom video is available for all to watch

Specific information regarding the content of exams and how students can best prepare for these will be available from individual subject areas in advance of each exam. Staff are only too happy to help with any issues and we recommend students talk to their teachers, form tutor, head of year or the pastoral team if they need any support or advice.

Enjoy revising!

Sports Update

June 10, 2022/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick
Well done to all those that competed in this week’s athletics fixture. The official results haven’t come back yet, however apparently a few Personal Best’s were smashed in the process – notably Nathan T in the triple jump and Andrea C in the shot put. We look forward to the upcoming fixtures next week.
Special mention also to the students below who successfully passed their recent kickboxing grading: Becky D, Hannah T, Annalisa R, Pearl P, Martha R, Rebecca R, Isabelle K, Tate H, Lucy U, Elsimae Z, Erin H and Gracie C.
