Year 12 Geographers went to sunny Swanage on Monday 21st April for 2 nights, to find inspiration for their independent investigation. We measured how much carbon was stored in trees in an oak woodland near Durlston Head, investigated evolving sand dunes, judged whether the coastal management was successful in Swanage, and evaluated whether Swanage was being positively or negatively affected by tourism… phew! Coupled with walks to Old Harry and Peverill Point, there was lots to be inspired by each day. Students showed exemplary effort in getting involved with every fieldwork investigation, and by the end of the trip many students had decided what they would investigate. In the summer, they conduct their own fieldwork in any country of their choosing. Whilst most go to a UK location, previous A level students we have taught have ended up going to Iceland, South Africa, and beyond! This is the students’ first taste of University level academia, where students question processes happening in the world, to disentangle how things work and why. We look forward to hearing about this year’s planned excursions in due course!
