Maths in Action
Earlier this month, a group of Year 10 students travelled to London to watch an interactive maths show hosted by Maths in Action. Speakers with backgrounds ranging from Academia and Quantitative Trading to Engineering and Space Science gave a series of fascinating talks designed to enhance mathematical understanding, improve problem solving skills and, above all, to raise awareness of the maths that is all around us. There was also an Exam Masterclass and even some mathematical poetry.
Questions discussed during the day included: “Are you more likely to be struck by lightning or win the lottery?”, “How are messages encrypted?” and “How many intelligent alien life forms are searching for us right now?”. (The answer to that last question is 7 by the way, but there were a few caveats!)
Students conducted themselves extremely well throughout the day and were engaged and courteous. We hope the trip has inspired them to continue their study of maths to A Level and beyond!
