Outstanding Achievement from Mandarin students in National Translation Competition

July 4, 2025/in Year 9/by Chrissy Dicks

We are delighted to announce that Daisy W. and Eliyana M., students in 9Op1 Mandarin, have been commended by the judging panel in this year’s Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators, a prestigious national competition hosted by Queen’s College, University of Oxford.

This is a remarkable accomplishment – the competition received nearly 5,000 entries from over 22,000 participants across the UK, with only a small number of entries selected for commendation.

Daisy and Eliyana’s work involved translating a Chinese poem, and their commendation is a true testament to their creativity, linguistic flair, and keen attention to detail. Their achievement reflects not only their individual dedication, but also the high standard of teaching and learning within our Mandarin department.

We are incredibly proud of their success and the positive representation it brings to our school and wider community. A huge congratulations to both students on this well-deserved recognition!

Students compete in the Maths Feast Competition

March 27, 2025/in Year 9/by Chrissy Dicks

On Thursday 20th March, we took 2 teams of year 10s to compete in the AMSP Maths Feast competition in Stevenage. This is a student enrichment event, whereby schools select teams of the best year 10 mathematicians to compete against other schools.

The two teams had to work together in a myriad of unusual maths questions designed to put their problem solving and teamwork skills to the test, with the Maths feast theme providing different skills and strategies for success with each course.

The two teams scored well, with one team finishing in the bottom third, and one in the middle, of the 24 competing schools. Well done to those students who took part: Joel D, Lily V, Reuben K, Lucy W, Bobby S, Henry G, Mia K, Isabelle K!

Tesco Property Day

October 24, 2024/in Year 9/by Chrissy Dicks

The whole of Year 9 were lucky to have several representatives from Tesco visit us for the day to explore the ‘Property’ aspect of the company.  Students participated in a variety of tasks led by the Tesco team, that opened their eyes to the thinking behind the location, size, concessions and layout of Tesco stores. This helped them in their ultimate task; to create and present their ‘Store of the Future’.

The students worked hard in their groups to create their stores and the presentations were fantastic, especially as the students were presenting to their whole year group! Students were able to justify why they had made certain decisions and the winning teams were awarded prizes at the end of the day. Not only was there lots of chocolate given out across the course of the day, but this activity was beneficial as it broadened the students’ understanding of the variety of jobs / careers within a large company such as Tesco. During the day, students also developed their employability skills and worked as a team throughout.

Centre of Computing History Visit.

March 8, 2024/in Year 9/by Chrissy Dicks

On Wednesday 14th February, year 9 Computing and IT students had the opportunity to visit The Centre of Computing History located in Cambridge.

The day was packed with enriching activities. Students had the opportunity to look at the development of games. They attended a workshop on the development of Robots and the uses of Robots throughout history. Students interacted with a Robot by having a conversation with her, she danced and went for a walk. We then looked at the development of technology and how devices progressed over time, the way storage mediums changed. In the final session students programmed a Raspberry Pi to flash lights and move the car.

Creative Careers Day with Sky Studios

December 14, 2023/in Year 9/by Chrissy Dicks

On Wednesday 6th December, we were joined for the day by Lauren from Sky Studios. Lauren led Creative Careers workshops throughout the day with all students in Year 9. Students were given an insight into the vast array of roles available in film, television and gaming, while also being made aware of the potential routes that people wishing to embark on such careers could take to get there. All students engaged magnificently and had some extremely insightful questions for Lauren, which she was happy to answer. Students learnt a lot from the workshop and enjoyed broadening their knowledge of the sector. Tom D even exclaimed at the end of the session, “I think I want to do this now! It sounds like a great career!”

The Tyre Challenge

November 16, 2023/in Year 9/by Chrissy Dicks
On Friday 10th November, all Year 9 students took part in the Tyre Challenge. For this we were given the problem of trying to use tyres in a sustainable and useful way for the community. Each form would get into groups of 3 to 5 and we had a budget of £3000. We had to make a slide show to show our ideas and tell the class the step by step of how we made our project. This included what roles your group have given to you, which were group leader, fianance and designer. We also had to design a logo to represent our company/ ideas and tell why we had put certain things in. We also had to explain in our presentation why our idea was useful to the community and we had to explain the financial aspect of the idea, breaking down what we are buying and why. When finished we were asked questions by a visitor from industry, Liz Redway, who came in and asked us about the company, which was really good feedback. Overall it was a very good thing to do which helped with our oracy skills, teamwork and budgeting, which are all good building blocks for life. It was a such a great experience and something that can be applied in anything. I had so much fun and would  strongly recommend this is for next years Year 9.

Making Slime

December 2, 2021/0 Comments/in Year 9/by Chrissy Dicks

Year 9 have been busy making slime as part of their ‘Making Materials’ topic: demonstrating the process of vulcanisation – whereby crosslinks form between polymer chains (in this case in Polyvinyl Acetate- a.k.a. PVA glue!)

Year 9 Careers Day – 16th September 2021

September 19, 2021/0 Comments/in Careers, Year 9/by Dean Inns

On Thursday 16th September, Year 9 students were involved in our very first careers drop-down day. The aim of the day was to get students thinking about their future and raising their aspirations.

We were incredibly lucky to secure some fantastic speakers for the day, who volunteered their time to talk to the students about their own career paths and how students, who may be interested in their profession, can embark on their own career journey.

We started with our very own Mr Hiscock, who spoke to students about his vast experience in the military; the army, in particular. Students were fascinated by his experience and were very surprised to learn that combat is only a small aspect of military life.

Dr Anna Mallott then spoke about her career in medicine and being a GP, in particular. Her passion for helping people and her interest in the human body was very engaging for the students and a number of students interested in a career in medicine remained behind after the talk to ask her questions.

Rob Jones, who is a pilot for Easyjet, spoke to the students about his career, firstly as cabin crew and then as a pilot. He spoke about the skills and qualities that are required of pilots and highlighted the need to remain calm in emergency situations. He had the students fascinated with the story of the American airline that landed in the Hudson River when both engines were taken out by birds!

Our last speaker, Alex Stevenson, is the Press Secretary to the Leader of the House of Commons. He spoke eloquently about life in and around the House of Commons and the role he plays in controlling what information the press have access to. The students were intrigued by his stories, but were a bit disappointed that he didn’t have Boris Johnson’s telephone number!

As well as being fortunate to be able to listen to some fantastic speakers, students were also involved in classroom based activities that introduced them to Unifrog (an online platform that we are using to assist in our delivery of careers education). Students considered what attributes they have, what careers they may be suited to and learnt how to use the platform to research different careers.

The buzz around students in the classrooms was fantastic to see – many had started to research careers that they had never thought of before and others were starting to plan how they might achieve their career goals.

I would like to thank all of the speakers for coming in to inspire our students on Thursday. We will be running many more careers events in future, where we would love to hear from people from as many different industries as possible. If you are interested in talking to some of our students in small groups and have capacity to give us some of your time, please contact Michelle Phillips: m.phillips@kwschool.co.uk.
