Year 12 Work Experience

July 4, 2025/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

Towards the end of June, our year 12 cohort embarked on their week long work experience placements, gaining a valuable glimpse into life beyond KWSixth. From engineering to accountancy, to law firms, to local primary schools, students spent time in a wide range of industries, exploring potential career paths and developing essential workplace skills.

Students learned how to communicate effectively with colleagues, manage their time, and adapt to different routines and expectations, gaining such a valuable insight into the working world. Employers praised their enthusiasm, professionalism, and willingness to learn.

Here is what a few students had to say:

Tiffany P. who worked with an architect in London said ‘It was a great experience and definitely got me thinking about architecture as a potential career route.’

Sofia M. said about her role in a financial conduct authority ‘I was given real responsibility as I was involved in meetings with the international division of the company as well as completing research for them.’

Ben A. did a placement in race track design, designing Formula 1 tracks and models. He said ‘I loved it and it is certainly a career path that I would embark on in the future.’

A big thank you to all the organisations that hosted our students and to the staff and families who helped make the week a success. Work Experience is a key milestone in the Year 12 journey – helping students connect classroom learning with real-world application and inspiring confidence for the future post KWS.

Enrichment Week – Bath Trip

July 4, 2025/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick

Year 9 and 10 students enjoyed a wonderful Austenian and Shellian inspired trip to the city of Bath; we began with a guided tour of the Georgian architecture hosted by the Jane Austen Centre, as well as a ghost tour of the city’s most haunted locations. In the afternoon of our first day, we explored the House of Frankenstein by learning about Mary Shelley’s famous novel and completing an escape room in Victor’s Lair. Our second day had a Roman focus with a special tour of the Ancient Roman Bathhouse: alongside exploring the bathhouse itself, students had the opportunity to interact with Roman artefacts in a learning session which also involved dressing in traditional Roman togas! Day two ended with a private cinema screening of Pride and Prejudice to round off a wholesome residential (and an opportunity to nap for some exhausted students!). All pupils on the trip were an absolute credit to the KWS community and I hope they will join us on our next English Faculty residential to a new literary city location… watch this space!

Y12 Mock Assessment Centre Day

July 4, 2025/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

On Wednesday 2nd July, we were fortunate to host representatives from Parker Hannifin, Coachpath Ltd, Amuma and J9W, who facilitated our Y12 Mock Assessment Centre Day. Year 12 students were put through their paces, with tasks including ice-breakers, creating and delivering presentations, budgeting tasks, and the ‘NASA’ task which requires students to rank items in order of importance for a spell in space! Students were observed throughout the day by our facilitators, and given feedback on their contributions to tasks throughout the day. Students were also involved in a CV writing workshop to prepare them for the job application process.

The day was enjoyed by both the students and facilitators, and gave useful insights to students about what employers look for when using the assessment centre method in their recruitment process. The facilitators were really impressed by the confidence of the students, while students commented on how valuable the day was in preparing them for the world of work and applying for jobs.

Battlefields in France and Belgium Trip

July 4, 2025/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick
The main history experience for Enrichment Week was a KS4-5 trip to the First World War Battlefields in France and Belgium. This was not just a trip that covered part of both GCSE and A-Level History courses, but also a trip to commemorate the hundreds of thousands of men who gave their lives in the conflict. On the first two days we explored the area around Ypres, Belgium, that was a key focus of the war, visiting trenches, bunkers, and comparing both German and Commonwealth cemeteries. There were hands-on activities learning about different gas masks and uniforms, and also the care and evacuation of soldiers from the battlefield. This included a visit to Essex Farm Cemetery where the Canadian Surgeon and Poet John McCrae ran a small hospital and wrote ‘In Flanders’ Fields’ – the poem that made poppies central to our remembrance of war dead. On the final evening in Ypres we laid a wreath in the Menin Gate Ceremony, and we had the honour of allowing Mabel K and Emma-JC to lay the wreath on behalf of the school and their own relatives who died in the war.

For the next two days we went further south to the Somme region. We began by focusing on the first day of the Somme, visiting the sunken lane, Newfoundland Park and Thiepval, all key battlefields, and looked at what went wrong that day. We also used Thiepval as a case study to show the development of the British Army that led to eventual victory in 1918. On the final day of the trip we had the opportunity to take Mabel K to the approximate location that her great uncle, Horace Brimelow, was killed in Delville Wood. From there we visited the trenches of Vimy Ridge, and toured the underground tunnels at Wellington Quarry – the latter used as a hospital and supply route up to the trenches using an old medieval quarry that was extended by tunnellers from New Zealand.

This was an incredibly moving experience for all of those involved, with a fantastic tour company who make the trip interesting, accessible and when appropriate, fun. The students were exemplary and fulfilled the KWS values to the full; parents and the school should be very proud of their conduct, we cannot wait for next year!

Almost there…

July 4, 2025/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

As we approach the end of the academic year, we’d like to politely remind everyone to please return any overdue library books to us. Remember, you can just drop these into the book return box in the library; there’s no need to justify its late return, we’d just be grateful to have it back. We’d also ask you to consider donating any study guides that you no longer need to the library, to help the next cohort of students here at KWS.

Do keep in mind that the ePlatform is available over the summer holiday to all KWS students, and you are welcome to have print books over the break too, so keep up with that reading over the summer break! There’s no better time to dive into a new book or a new adventure!

This month sees the start of South Asian Heritage month, which runs from 18th July until 17th August and first took place in 2020, so is a relatively new observance. The month seeks to understand the diverse heritage and cultures that link the UK with South Asia.

Our Student Library Assistants have gathered together a collection of books to showcase the texts we have that are set in South Asia, or are written by South Asian authors, or featuring South Asian characters. So, do pop in and have a browse. We have so much to offer and a lovely, cool, calm environment in which to explore it all.

Iceland: A Land of Fire and Ice – Our Incredible Educational Journey!

July 4, 2025/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick
What an amazing experience our Year 9 and 10 Geography students had on their recent Enrichment Week Trip to Iceland! This four-day adventure was packed with incredible geological wonders, breathtaking landscapes, and unforgettable moments, giving our students a firsthand look at the powerful forces shaping our planet.

Our journey began bright and early with a flight from London Heathrow to Keflavik International Airport. Upon arrival, we wasted no time diving into Iceland’s unique geology. One of the highlights was visiting the Bridge Between the Continents, a symbolic footbridge literally spanning a fissure where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates are pulling apart. Talk about a geology lesson in action, and Mr. Timberlake was soon in his element! Next, we explored the fascinating Gunnuhver Hot Springs, a highly active geothermal area. Students observed massive mud pools and steam vents, learning how volcanic gases and seawater create this incredible natural phenomenon. We then ventured to the Nátthagi Valley, the site of recent volcanic eruptions. Seeing the vast, newly formed lava fields was a powerful reminder of Earth’s dynamic nature. Safety was key here – we learned why it’s crucial never to walk on new, unstable lava as steam was still coming off it from the last eruption in April! Our day concluded in Reykjavik, Iceland’s vibrant capital. Students had a chance to see famous landmarks like the iconic Hallgrímskirkja church and learn about the city’s rich history, dating back to 874 AD. They were then given an opportunity to explore the city in small groups and do some shopping for gifts.

Day two took us along Iceland’s stunning South Coast, a region famous for its dramatic scenery. Our first stop was Gluggafoss Waterfall, also known as “Window Falls,” where the river has carved unique arches and tunnels through the soft rock. We spent time at the LAVA Centre, a high-tech, interactive exhibition dedicated to explaining Iceland’s powerful volcanic activity and frequent earthquakes. This was a fantastic way to deepen our understanding of the science behind what we were seeing. The majestic Skógafoss (rainbow) Waterfall captivated everyone with its sheer power but unfortunately, due to the weather, no rainbows were present. Some even heard whispers of the local legend about a hidden chest of gold but despite attempts, Mr. Hiscock had no luck finding it! At Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, we marvelled at the unique black sands and towering basalt columns.  It was here that we were lucky to come across hundreds of nesting puffins, an amazing sight, but not for all students as one student (not mentioning any names) was unlucky to have a puffin mess on their jacket! One of the most exhilarating experiences was a guided glacier walk on Sólheimajökull. Kitted out with helmets, crampons, and ice axes, students explored the stunning ice formations, gaining firsthand insight into the effects of climate change as well as experience a Viking press-up, the traditional way to obtain water from glaciers. We ended our day at Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, famous for its path that allows you to walk behind the cascading water – a truly immersive experience (and a great test for waterproofs!).  It’s fair to say that at the end there were some very wet students and some excellent new profile pictures for their social media.

Our final full day was dedicated to the famous “Golden Circle,” showcasing some of Iceland’s most iconic natural and historical sites. We started with a relaxing visit to the Secret Lagoon, a naturally occurring hot spring that’s been a local favourite for centuries. A perfect way to warm up and see a small geyser erupting every few minutes! The awe-inspiring Gullfoss Waterfall, or “The Golden Waterfall,” truly lived up to its name with its enormous, powerful cascades dropping into a deep canyon. At the Geysir Geothermal Area, we witnessed the incredible power of Strokkur Geysir, which regularly erupts, sending boiling water and steam shooting high into the sky! A sweet stop at Efsti-dalur II – Ice Cream Farm gave us a taste of local produce, learning about sustainable farming practices and enjoying some delicious homemade ice cream. Our final major stop was Þingvellir National Park. Here, we could clearly see the rift between the Eurasian and North American plates, but perhaps even more importantly, we learned about its historical significance as the site of the Alþingi, the world’s first democratic parliament established in 930 AD and where the Vikings first landed in Iceland.

On the fourth day, we were up nice and early again, heading back to Keflavik  Airport and our journey to Heathrow, then back to KWS.

This trip was an incredible success, providing our students with invaluable educational experiences and memories that will last a lifetime. A massive thank you to all the students for their enthusiasm and excellent conduct, and to Mrs. Hobson, Mr. Hiscock, Miss Longstaff, Miss Annie and Miss Noe for making this unforgettable adventure possible!

Sixth Form Induction Day Friday 20th June

June 20, 2025/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick

On Friday 20th June, KWSixth welcomed nearly 200 students for our Year 12 induction day. The day was a great success, with students conducting themselves exceptionally well both in the Sixth Form area and during their induction lessons.

It was especially pleasing to welcome so many new students from other schools — we look forward to fully welcoming them into the KWSixth community in the coming months.

We wish all Year 11 students the very best of luck as they await their exam results, and we look forward to officially enrolling them into KWSixth on 21st August.

U13 Girls County Cricket Winners!

It was a great day out for the U13 cricket team in the county finals on Monday. The team had a tough group against Dame Alice Owen’s and John Warner, but prevailed and came out winners. Then they had the semi final against Marlborough, which they won comfortably. The final was against St George’s, which we knew would be a challenge, but the girls won the final by 20 runs and are now in the regional finals in July! A massive well done to the whole squad on a great accomplishment.

Athletics

We also wanted to share with you a number of results from recent athletics meets:

Firstly, in the county league athletics two weeks ago, the U14 girls relay team of Poppy, Sophie, Kayla B and Sophia won their event. Other first placings included, Rose S in the triple jump,  Lucy H in the 1500m, Jessie T-L in the discus, Charlie D in the long jump and Sophia J in Year 7 winning the Year 8 200m race.

At the recent Herts County Championships, Sophia J also won the Year 7 long jump and came second in the 200m. Heather G also came second in the Year 7 girls high jump. Huge congratulations – that is a very impressive achievement!

Last Thursday, we also attended a district athletics event involving around 20 schools. Students performed admirably throughout. Sophia J won the Year 7 long jump and came second in the 200m. Harry S in Year 10 came second in the 400m. Lucy H also finished second in the high jump for Year 8, and Ella P in Year 9 came second in the 1500m, which was a gruelling race, especially when it was as hot as it was. Jessie T-L got bronze in the Year 9 hurdles and Sophie K got bronze in the 300m.

We also had 2 gold medals in Year 10, with Darci M winning the 200m and Jesse G winning the high jump. Both Darci and Jesse (who got the national indoor standard of 1.82m) have achieved national standard in their respective events, which is an outstanding achievement.

Football

Lastly, we wanted to acknowledge Sophie K in Year 8, who has just been signed by the Watford FC U14 football Academy for the upcoming season. Well done, Sophie!

Well Done to Our Year 12 Students

Congratulations to all our Year 12 students who have completed their end-of-year exams this week. The exams were rigorous and aligned with the standards of next summer’s A Level assessments.

Our students approached these exams with maturity, determination, and a strong desire to succeed. We are incredibly proud of their effort and commitment.

Subject teachers will be sharing results over the coming weeks. These results will play a key role in informing students’ predicted grades for their UCAS applications.

Well done once again to all Year 12 students – your hard work has not gone unnoticed. We wish you the very best as you receive your results.

Windrush Day and Refugee Week

June 20, 2025/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

This week’s library displays cover two nationally recognised events – Refugee week (16th – 22nd June) and Windrush day (22nd June), and we’ve worked hard to curate a set of books to give our students a flavour of the history and reasoning behind each of these celebratory events.

Windrush Day marks the anniversary of the HMS Empire Windrush docking in Britain, and it’s an opportunity to celebrate our British Caribbean communities. It’s also a chance to acknowledge and give thanks for the service and the sacrifices of the Windrush generation. Benjamin Zephaniah has given us a wonderful novel, Windrush Child, telling the story of a child arriving on the Windrush, and the struggles he has settling into his new home, which is so very different from his home in Jamaica. And for those looking for something more weighty then the very well regarded Small Island, by Andrea Levy, might be for you.

Refugee week is a chance to celebrate the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and those seeking asylum. This year the theme is “Community as a Superpower” and there are many festivals, talks, tours and events taking place. In terms of reading materials, we’re delighted to recommend Onjali Q, Rauf’s The Boy At The Back of The Class and the classic When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, by Judith Kerr. Another recommendation from the library staff is a book called You Don’t Know What War Is, by Yeva Skalietska, which is the diary of a 12 year old girl, telling the story of the war in Ukraine through her young eyes. It’s very moving, and gives a real insight into living with a war ever encroaching, whilst also attempting to maintain some semblance of a normal life.
