Black History Month at KWS

October 22, 2026/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

As we approach half term, it has been a busy month at KWS as we mark Black History Month.

This year’s national theme was “Honouring Our Communities”.

Our school caterers also gave the opportunity to students to try foods hailing from across the African/Caribbean regions which went down well – food often brings people together and it is these kinds of opportunities that spark conversations between students and staff alike that bring people together.

In addition to this, Mrs Yates, the school library manager, also organised an annual visit from Adisa the Verbalizer running workshops in the library; students were gripped by his National Poetry Day visit

Library Reading Challenges – Winner Announced

October 22, 2026/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

Year 7 and year 8 students have fortnightly library lessons; they are brought to the library by their English teacher and have a chance to read for pleasure and hear all about our latest books or books that we are promoting.

They have reading challenges too:

Year 7 students take part in the Big Purple Challenge and are encouraged to read 10 books over the course of the academic year (6 from a list we provide and 4 of their own choice).

Year 8 students are challenged to read one book a month from the genre of the month.

They submit reading reviews, either on a paper form or electronically via Accessit -all reviews earn a recognition and entry into the prize draw (year 7s also get a magnetic bookmark).

In the final Celebration Assembly of the half term, the winner is chosen at random from all the entries.

And the winner for this half term is: Amaia Malik (year 8)

Well done Amaia – she wins a book to keep from our prize book collection

Donate to Our Friendship Boxes

October 22, 2026/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

This term, The Interact club is helping Rotary Harpenden with collecting donations for the Friendship Boxes initiative to bring joy, comfort, and smiles to children in Ukraine who are facing difficult times. We need your help to fill these boxes with love and meaningful items! We are asking for donations of new, unused items to help build these special care packages.

As you know, the ongoing war is seriously affecting the mental health and educational progress of children and young people living in war torn Ukraine. They need interesting and stimulating things to do while in the shelters or at home. We seek your support to fill these boxes with items such as:

  • Coloured pencils,
  • Crayons
  • Colouring books
  • Puzzles
  • Reading books (English is now being taught in Ukrainian schools),
  • Small toys
  • Hats
  • Gloves
  • Scarves
  • Anything else you think will take their minds off the war that continues to rage around them.

Please do not include: food, liquids, powders, batteries, religious artefacts or items with sharp edges.

Please drop off your donations in the collection boxes located in the main school reception by 6th November.

Thank you so much for your generosity and continued support.

Spanish Trip 2026

October 22, 2026/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

Spanish Trip 2026

Our recent Spanish trip was a fantastic success! Students had a wonderful opportunity to experience Spanish culture, practise their language skills and enjoy time together outside the classroom. They were excellent ambassadors for the school, and we received lovely compliments from hotel staff about their politeness and behaviour. It was great to see students growing in confidence, making memories and embracing the experience. A huge thank you to all the staff who helped make the trip such a success!

UCAS Update – offers already being received!

October 22, 2026/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

We are pleased to report that all of our early entry applicants sent off their applications by the deadline on the 15th October.  They have applied for a range of subjects from Natural Sciences to PPE (Philosophy; Politics & Economics) and Medicine.  We are now preparing them for interview – if anyone is interested in helping with practice interviews please do contact Miss Dayton in Sixth Form (f.dayton@kwschool.co.uk).

Of course we now want the rest of Year 13 who are planning to apply to get their applications sent off.  Our early applicants have already received offers from universities like Manchester, York and Leeds which is fantastic and we are hoping the same will happen for the rest of our Year 13 cohort. Once students are ready to send their applications they need to see Miss Dayton (works Mon-Weds).

Remember – if you can help with practice interviews for our early applicants please do get in touch.

KWSixth Dragons Apprentice Challenge

October 9, 2026/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

KWSixth have entered three teams in this year’s Dragons’ Apprentice Challenge. Working alongside their selected dragon (business expert) they need to turn £100 into £1000, with all proceeds going to their selected charity. We are looking forward to seeing what entrepreneurial and creative fund raising ideas and events they come up with. Please look out for their upcoming events and look out for all three teams at the KWAF Fireworks night on 6th November.

Year 12 Work Experience Launch

October 8, 2026/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

This week we launched the work experience process with our Year 12 students.  They now begin the task of finding a work experience placement (for week beginning 28th June).  Students have been asked to ensure that their CV is up to date and then they can begin to research companies and industries.  Once they have secured a place, they have to input all the information to their Unifrog account (instructions on how to do this are on Google Classroom).  Their deadline for organising and inputting their work experience onto Unifrog is Monday 22nd February.  We are looking forward to seeing all the exciting placements that our students organise.

Students have started applying to university this year!

October 8, 2026/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

KWSixth is pleased to announce that this year’s university application process is well underway, with the first Year 13 students sending off their applications this week.  Students who are applying to Oxford, Cambridge or to study medicine or dentistry have to send their applications off by 15th October so it is great to see students being really organised and sending off their applications before the deadline.  They have worked really hard researching their universities and courses, and then writing the challenging personal statement – but finally all that is done. They can now sit back and wait for offers to come in, and of course work hard to get the grades they need!  We wish all our students every success with their university applications.

Library visit from Adisa the Verbaliser

October 8, 2026/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

It’s been a very busy and very enjoyable week in the library. To celebrate National Poetry Day we had a visit from Adisa The Verbalizer (www.adisaworlds.com) who was absolutely fantastic. All of our year 7 students got to watch him perform this poetry, and then 50 lucky students were able to take part in a poetry workshop with him. It was a fantastic day, and we’re very grateful to KWAF for funding this visit. We really hope all the students who met Adisa were inspired by the visit.

This month we are recognising Dyslexia Awareness Month, and one of our wonderful Student Library Assistants, Finley C, suggested we have a dyslexia display in the library. He’s also taken the time to write a piece about dyslexia to read in the school assembly to raise awareness. Well done Finley! We’d encourage everyone to drop by and have a look at the display, to find out more about dyslexia, and to see how the library is supporting our dyslexic readers.
