Meeting with Delegates from the Chinese Embassy

September 25, 2025/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick
On Friday 19th September, Mrs Hobson took two KWS Students who are studying A-Level Chinese, to St George’s School to meet with delegates from the Chinese Embassy.
They had very kindly donated a selection of Chinese books to the school, and we were greeted by the Mayor of Harpenden and the team from The Harpenden History Society to receive them.
The event commemorated the work of George Hogg, who attended St George’s School many years ago, creating a legacy when he supported young people to escape the war taking place in China.
It was a great privilege to be at the event and our A-level students did amazingly, speaking to the delegates in Chinese.

New Year 12 Cohort

September 11, 2025/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick

This week, we were proud to welcome our new Year 12 cohort, marking a milestone as Katherine Warington becomes a full school. Our Year 12 students have already demonstrated an impressive attitude and strong work ethic in their first few days, making an excellent first impression. We extend a particularly warm welcome to those students who have joined us from other schools, and we look forward to seeing all of our year 12 students achieve success as they embark on their sixth form journey with us.

Welcome Back to the Library

September 11, 2025/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

Welcome back to all our students from the KWS Library Team. We hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable summer, and that everyone has settled back into school life quickly and happily. We thought we would use this newsletter to remind our users of the services we provide, our opening hours and our facilities.

Our library caters for all students aged 11 – 18, and everyone is very welcome. The library is staffed from 08:30 – 16:30 Monday through Thursday, and 08:30 – 16:00 on Friday. All students can access the library at break and lunch times and also during Home Learning Club.

A Google form will be sent to parents of year 7 students which can be filled in if permission is granted for students to read books deemed to be above their chronological age.

Year 7 and year 8 will have a library lesson once a fortnight during one of their English lessons to choose a book either in print or on our ePlatform, they will have a chance to read for pleasure and have their reading trackers signed. Of course, if students wish to listen to audiobooks they must bring their own headphones.

The library has a selection of magazines (Beano, The Week, Phoenix) but we always welcome donations of these to keep our collection updated.

We have some exciting new reading challenges launching soon, which we hope will encourage our readers. Launching soon we have The Big Purple Reading Challenge for year 7 and The National Year of Reading for year 8. We’re hoping lots of our students will engage with the challenges and enjoy furthering their reading skills.

Great North Run – Completed it!

September 11, 2025/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

The morning air in Newcastle was a crisp mix of anticipation and nerves. My number was pinned, my laces were double-knotted, I had all the gadgets needed. Some would say, “all the gear and no idea”. I was just one of thousands, but for my Dad and I, this was more than a race; it was a mission. Each stride was for a cause that mattered, with every penny raised a testament to the generosity of my family, friends, colleagues and parents of students at KWS.

The first few miles were a blur of jostling bodies and nervous energy, but as the pack spread out, the true spirit of the Great North Run revealed itself. It wasn’t just about the runners; it was about the crowds. The streets were lined with a continuous, deafening wall of cheers. Children held out hands for high fives, giving out sweets, while others offered slices of orange and cups of water. It was the moment a woman pressed a freezing cold ice lolly into my hand that I truly felt it – the collective, overwhelming kindness of strangers. It was the best ice lolly I have ever had!

We got a bit excited early on having been well under our target time which meant that we were going to feel it later on. When we found it tough, we thought of those who had supported us: family, friends, the parents of students at KWS, and my fellow staff members. Their generosity had already pushed me past my £500 goal, and that knowledge was a powerful fuel.

The final mile felt like a lifetime, but the sight of the sea and the promise of the finish line were everything. We dug deep, the sound of the crowd a thunderous roar urging us forward, as well as a dark cloud with heavy rain catching up on us. Crossing the line was a moment of pure emotion – exhaustion, relief, and an immense sense of gratitude. The Great North Run isn’t just a race; it’s a shared experience, a celebration of human spirit.

For everyone who contributed, your support meant the world. We’ve raised over £500, but there’s still time to help a great cause.

If you’d like to support the fundraiser, you can still donate here: https://ajbellgreatnorthrun2025.enthuse.com/pf/garry-jones?

If you want to find out more about the cause and help raise awareness, please visit: https://www.thecalmzone.net/

Thank you all for your support! It is now time to rest my knees!

Attendance Rewards, Review & Absence Reporting Procedures

September 10, 2025/in News/by Chrissy Dicks

Attendance Rewards, Review & Absence Reporting Procedures

As a school, we place great importance on attendance and expect that all our students will achieve an attendance level of at least 96% each academic year. Parents have a legal responsibility to ensure their child attends school regularly and punctually.

Any student with an attendance figure below 90% is defined nationally as a persistent absentee. This equates to just over 3 days of absence per half term and applies if the absence is authorised or unauthorised. If a student were to get a score of 90% on a maths test this would be very good. If, however, a student’s attendance is 90% over their five years of compulsory school age, from Year 7 to 11, this equates to missing half a year of school, which is detrimental to any individual, regardless of their academic ability.

There is a strong statistical link between attendance and attainment. Studies show that students with the highest attainment in their GCSE exams, at the end of Year 11, have higher rates of attendance over Years 10 and 11, compared to those with the lowest attainment.

Whilst we appreciate that students do become ill through the school year, a lot of minor ailments can be self-managed in school with over the counter medication from a pharmacist and we encourage positive attendance, where possible, to prevent missing out on learning. This link to the NHS website provides additional guidance.

We review attendance regularly and follow an attendance procedure based on each student’s attendance percentage. The school operates the Penalty Notice process for 10 or more unauthorised sessions of absence (the equivalent of 5 school days) over a 10 week school period which can span different terms or school years. Please note a session is half a day of unauthorised absence. Separate Penalty Notices can be issued to each parent in respect of each child. The amount payable is £160 (per parent, per child) if paid within 28 days, but will be reduced to £80 if paid within 21 days. A second penalty notice issued to the same parent in respect of the same child will be charged at a flat rate of £160 if paid within 28 days. A third penalty notice cannot be issued within 3 years of the date of the issue of the first penalty notice. If this limit is reached, a parenting order or prosecution will be considered. If a prosecution goes ahead at court the fine could be up to £2,500.

There are 13 weeks of the year to take holidays out of term time, therefore, we strongly advise parents/carers to avoid booking holidays during term time. We appreciate there may be exceptional circumstances behind a request for leave. If this is the case, you should give a detailed explanation as to why it is necessary for you to take your child out of school by completing the form on the attendance page of the school website and send it to absence@kwschool.co.uk where it will be forwarded to Mr Martin for his consideration. Please note a need or desire for a holiday or other absence for the purpose of leisure and recreation would not constitute as an exceptional circumstance.

Rewarding Excellent Attendance

Students who attain 100% attendance every half term will receive a personalised email from the Headteacher and five students will be placed in a draw to win a early lunch pass for the week.  If they achieve 100% in a whole term, they will receive a personalised email from the Headteacher and five students will be placed in a draw to win a free school meal for the week.  In addition to this, all students with 100% attendance over a term will have their name entered into a prize draw, which takes place at the end of the school year: May (for Year 11 & 13) & July (for Years 7-10 & 12). The more terms that a student attends without absence, the more entries they have in the draw, which increases their chances of winning. Prizes of Amazon Vouchers range from £5 – £50.

By working together, we can help students reach their full potential and make the most of the opportunities school has to offer. If you feel you would like support with your child’s attendance or well-being, please do not hesitate to contact their Head of Year.

Absence Reporting

If your child is unable to attend school due to illness, urgent appointments or other reasons please use the Arbor Parent Portal App (instructions shown below), telephone the 24hr school absence line on 01582 314800 or email absence@kwschool.co.uk by 8.30am at the latest, on the first day of absence and every subsequent day thereafter.

  • Please provide your child’s name and tutor group
  • Please give as much detail as possible for the reason of absence, avoiding using terms such as ‘unwell’ or ‘under the weather’
  • If you fail to contact the school to inform us of your child’s absence, this will be referred to our safeguarding team who may consider it is appropriate to complete a safe and well check

Reporting Absences on Arbor Parent Portal APP – Guide

In order to report absence through the Arbor Parent Portal APP, go to the home page of the Arbor app.

To record an absence, click on the Quick Actions button and then click Attendance

Please note that informing the school is a key responsibility of parents/carers. When staff from both the attendance and safeguarding team take time out of their day to chase families, it detracts from the support we can offer to students in school. Therefore, please ensure all reports are made by 8.30am.

Where possible, please give plenty of notice for any planned absence, for example hospital appointments, by using the Arbor parent portal app or emailing absence@kwschool.co.uk.
