Attendance Rewards – Form Winners

February 28, 2025/in News/by Chrissy Dicks

Attendance Rewards

The school is keen to reward good attendance and has introduced some additional incentives to promote positive attendance.

Every half term the form who has the best attendance will receive some sweets from their form tutor (allergies & intolerance taken into consideration) and extra house points for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.

Our winners for the first part of the spring half term were 7 Ali with the runners up being 9 Ali & 7 Nightingale.  Congratulations to them all!

                          1st Place                               2nd Place                               3rd Place

We also recognise students who achieve 100% attendance in every half term.  During the last six weeks between January and February, we were thrilled that 423 students achieved this and received a personalised email of congratulations from Mr Martin.

By achieving 100% in a whole term, they will have their name entered into a prize draw, where there are five prizes for a free school meal up to the value of £2.90 to be added to their Arbor account. All 100% students over this period of time will also be entered into the grand prize draw which takes place in the summer which will consist of Amazon vouchers ranging from £50 to £5.

The more terms a student has 100% attendance, the more entries they receive into the summer grand prize draw.

Attendance is key to success and attendance statistics reset every half term so it’s never too late for students to make a difference with achieving good attendance for the remainder of the school year.

If you require any support with a student’s attendance please don’t hesitate to contact their Head of Year.

If you have any queries with regards to attendance processes, please don’t hesitate to contact Chrissy Dicks and Katrina Linehan, the school’s Attendance Managers.

Munich Trip

February 28, 2025/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick

Just before half term KWS GCSE History students from Year 11 went to Munich in southern Germany. This was a trip to help extend their knowledge of the rise of Nazi Germany in the city where Hitler first came to prominence. The weather was cold for much of the trip but the students were well prepared and made the most of their opportunities to see the beautiful city, faithfully reconstructed after it was bombed during the Second World War.

After an eventful first couple of hours, we went out for a walking tour of the old town, and saw lots of the main sites, and went to where Hitler’s attempted revolution, the Munich Putsch, was stopped in a shootout with the local police in November 1923. The second day we took a coach to the nearby city of Nuremberg and saw the rally grounds where Hitler paraded the strength of his new country after he took power. As if to mirror this, we spent the afternoon at the Nuremberg Trials courtroom, and saw where the evil perpetrators of Nazi Germany faced justice.

The following day started with the most moving part of the trip, to see the Dachau Memorial Site, at the former concentration camp there. This was a fascinating experience, but also a troubling one, and like all concentration camps there is an atmosphere that is difficult to describe, but everyone could feel it. We spent the afternoon back in Munich and gave the students some free time to take in the old town themselves.

On the final day we explored the 1972 Olympic Park and used this to discuss the 1936 Berlin Olympics which Hitler used as a propaganda exercise top show the power of Nazi Germany and the Aryan. We quickly visited the global HQ of BMW before heading into the Old Town again and visiting the centre of the Nazi government in Munich, where Hitler’s assassinations in the Night of the Long Knives was planned and launched. This was also the site of the notorious book burnings by the Nazis to destroy the culture and knowledge of those that did not fit their worldview, like Jewish people and other political ideologies.

From here we went back to the hotel and collected our belongings and made our way to the airport. The staff on the trip, and of KWS in general were very proud of the students and their conduct on a very powerful trip. We hope it will stay in their memories forever. There is nothing better than visiting the sites of great historical events to make them real to the students who may have to write about them in their exams.

Student council update

February 28, 2025/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick

Over the Spring term we have held our first student council meetings of the academic year. They have been highly successful and have given our student body the opportunity to voice their ideas and opinions on a range of areas. The focus has been on teaching and learning, facilities and the extra curricular offering including period 7 and ideas for the house system. The ideas from the meetings have been communicated by the head students to the SLT who are now working proactively to put them into practice. A big thank you to all of our student council representatives and to our four head students who chaired the meetings.

We look forwards to the next round of meetings taking place in the first half of the summer term.

Invitiation to Ramadan dinner

February 27, 2025/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks
Dear parents and carers,
With great excitement, I am able to announce that KWS are hosting an interfaith community Ramadan iftar (dinner) at school on Thursday 13th March at 5.30pm. Last year we held a smaller event hosting a number of students alongside over a dozen community groups including local churches and charities. This year we are able to extend this to the wider school community with a number of tickets available at £5 each which covers the cost of a 3 course meal and access to activities including a quiz, crafts and henna art (temporary tattoos). Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims and with ‘charity’ being an integral component of the Islamic faith, the event is a charitable opportunity as per last year to gather a collection for St Albans Food Bank who support our local families in times of hardship. Currently their most needed items include UHT milk, pasta, cereal, tinned tomatoes and toilet roll.
Last year’s dinner proved to be a heart-warming experience which left all attendees feeling connected and uplifted as a community.
With Muslims fasting during the daylight hours each day of the four week period of Ramadan, on the evening of our Ramadan dinner we are offering a unique opportunity to experience, in a real-time manner, eating together at sunset – the time of breaking a fast (although of course not everybody will be fasting). We encourage your family to attend our community-focused event and meet other families in an informal setting with lots of amazing food and a real buzz in the air as the attached video will demonstrate. If your child would like to attend without an adult, please ensure suitable arrangements are made for them to get home safely as we are planning on finishing the evening around 8pm.
Tickets can be purchased via this link and will be distributed on a ‘first come first served basis’ with the final purchase date being Wednesday 5th March;
https://www.create-herts.co.uk/event/promoting-togetherness-community-iftar-18/register
On this link there will be a food menu choice for the evening and further logistical information.
I am very much looking forward to hosting you and am available to answer any questions you may have,
Annie Khaliq

Wonderfully creative entries for the Trinity School Book Awards

February 27, 2025/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

We’ve absolutely loved seeing the students’ entries for the Trinity School Book awards competition over the last few weeks. This award aims to celebrate quality writing in both new and older fiction, and is based around a different theme each year. This year the theme is You Are Here, and our students have been invited to enter the TSBA competition to write a book review or produce some form of creative response to one of the books on the shortlist. We’ve really enjoyed seeing the reviews and art-works produced by our students; an amazing piece of crochet from Violet and Julie in year 7 really impressed us! We’re crossing our fingers that one or more of our students wins a prize. Good luck to all who entered!

We were kept busy creating various book displays in our library over the last two weeks of the half term, including a rainbow themed display for LGBT+ History Month, a romance-filled St Valentine’s Day arrangement, and a celebration of Charles Dickens Day. We hope these displays inspire our students to read around a theme they’re interested in, or to try something new. Next up, Michael Morpurgo Month. Sir Michael Morpurgo has written over 150 books, so there are plenty to choose from! His most popular works include War Horse and Private Peaceful, and his latest book is called Cobweb, and is narrated by a Welsh corgi!  Why not give one a try this month? There really is something for everyone in the Michael Morpurgo collection.

Pitch Perfect: Students Shine at the Senior Concert

February 7, 2025/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

Last night (6th February), over 60 students from the Senior School and Sixth Form showcased their talents at the Senior Concert. The evening featured a diverse range of music, from Telemann, Mozart, and Beethoven to Chappell Roan, as well as original compositions by the students.

The performers were a credit to themselves and the school, displaying an incredible level of maturity and skill. “It was an amazing experience to perform in front of such a supportive audience,” said Grace, a Year 12 student. “I loved every moment of it.”

Mrs. Sheehey,, one of the peri teachers, added, “The students have worked incredibly hard, and their dedication truly shone through in their performances. We are very proud of them.”

A special thank you goes to our peri teachers, Mr. McCabe, Mrs. Sheehey, and Mrs. Russell-Belgrave, along with the performing arts team, for their invaluable support in making the event a success.

Orienteering

We are delighted that we have finally had an orienteering course installed around the school grounds in the last few weeks. Orienteering provides an excellent opportunity for students to develop their map reading skills, as well as cardiovascular endurance. We have introduced it into core PE lessons for Year 10 and 11, and will make it part of the curriculum timetable for all year groups moving forwards. Thank you very much indeed to KWAF for providing the funding for this fantastic additional feature to the PE curriculum – it is greatly appreciated.

Gymnastics

A massive well done to everyone who competed in the recent trampolining competition over the weekend. It was an extremely tough competition and they all did their absolute best. All 9 competitors performed brilliantly with:

Will E – 2nd Place

Jude D – 5th place

Matthew P – 2nd place

Riley W – 4th place

Joshua P – 6th place

Dylan W – 2nd place

Violet R – 9th place

Sophie D – 2nd place (team only)

Lucy H – 5th place (team only)

All the boys progressed to the BSGA National Finals in Derby in March.  Well done all.

Netball

During the recent weeks, we have also had some entertaining netball fixtures for a variety of year groups, with fixtures against Sandringham, Roundwood, Beaumont, St George’s and Samuel Ryder.  Amelia S, Macy R, Violet S and Emily C (all Year 7), Emily (Year 8) and Chloe T (Year 9) were all highlighted as KWS’s most outstanding players in terms of performance and effort in their respective games.

Football

A clinical win by our Year 9 boys’ football team in the quarter final of the county cup against Ashlyns School. A mixture of goal scorers and every squad member got valuable game time. We look forward to our semi final against Chauncy School at the beginning of March.

To run alongside this, we have also had a number of Saturday football fixtures for Years 7-10 against St Columba’s College and Nicholas Breakspear. Some hugely impressive performances from all year groups, including Year 10 having a morale-boosting and convincing win in their most recent game. Particularly impressive performances across the school from Noah E (Year 7), Henry C (Year 9), Liam E (Year 9) and James B (Year 10).
