Bank of England Trip

On Wednesday, students visited the Bank of England Museum.

Across Year 10 Business, our students are studying the role of finance, the impact of technology increasing on businesses and the economy, and how this is having an impact on the consumers who are making the choice to purchase goods and services.

In Business, the economy and money rules all. Money and the way we use it has changed in recent decades. With digital and contactless payments on the rise, the choices we make, as individuals and businesses are having an impact. Futureproofing the economy to meet our needs, now and in the future, is the job of the Bank of England

Students were able to explore the changes in history, how it has impacted the bank, what the bank does and what banks can do to ensure they can keep to their inflation target rate of 2%.

They were all so incredibly brilliant, presented KWS in a positive light, and portrayed interest in the role of the bank.

I am so unbelievebly proud of the effort they have put into their course so far.

A special thank you to our unbelievable staff that assisted in the trip too!

PE Update

District Athletics Championships

On Thursday 13th June we took students from Years 7-10 to the District Athletics Championships at Woodside Stadium in Watford. We had some fantastic performances throughout the day and the students represented the school superbly. Special mention to Darci M in 200m, and Lexi F and Harry S in the long jump for becoming district champions. Well done also to Jessie T-L (hurdles), Harry S (300m) and Poppy D (long jump) for finishing 3rd in their respective events. Hugely impressive performances!

Cricket

County cricket tournament U13 girls came 3rd and U15 girls came 4th. Great bowling from Anna M, Rose S and Jessica K. Izzy J was recognised as the most outstanding batter too. Well done to everyone that participated.

Sports Day

All this week, students have had an assembly about the format and plan for Sports Day(s) on Thursday 27th and Friday 28th June. Hopefully it should be a fantastic opportunity for students to showcase their sporting ability and also to be as physically active as possible.

Just a reminder that with the temperatures due to be high next week, please ensure your child has a filled water bottle when they start their sporting activities. As well as this, sun tan cream and sun hats are advised too. We thoroughly look forward to next week and sharing the results in due course!

Spanish Play

I really enjoyed the play it was easy to understand although we didn’t know all the words. It was very funny and they interacted with us as an audience and brought Oscar up to do some translations. My favourite character was Carlotta because she was strong willed. The acting was brilliant, we could really see as an audience that Paloma was psychotic. I feel like my Spanish has improved significantly after watching the play.

The Spanish play was extremely entertaining! I learnt a lot of new vocabulary, as well as being surprised at how much I actually understood.

El miércoles, vimos una obra de teatro sobre una pareja que hizo una reserva duplicada en un AirBnB. Fue muy divertida y la historia tenía un trama muy buena y emocionante

On Wednesday we saw a theatre show about a couple that made a double reservation on an AirBnB. The play was very fun and the plot was very good and exciting . In addition, we had the opportunity to have a real-life experience where we got to practice our listening skills.

Year 10 Work Experience

Students in Year 10 spent a week in the world of work for their work experience week. Student placements were varied and ranged from working in educational settings, working with animals and within the NHS, to placements in aircraft museums, the Department for Innovation and Technology, and the MTR Crossrail Elizabeth Line.

Students very much enjoyed the experience, where they had the chance to develop employability skills beyond the classroom. The employers were also very impressed with the students from KWS, with a number reporting that the student that they had from Year 10 was the “best work experience student they had ever had”. This has resulted in some of our students being offered further opportunities within the companies that they were placed with. Some examples of positive feedback are outlined below:

“The team were full of praise for Harry, stating he is a ‘great lad’ who settled in brilliantly from his first day. He has worked across Engineering and Quality Departments with excellent time keeping, constant positivity and a can do attitude, showing interest in every task he has been asked to complete,”

“Alina has fully immersed herself in the world of private specialist dentistry. She has been in surgeries lending a helping hand, as well helped the patients to feel less nervous or helped young children to stay on the chair,”

“Louisa has worked exceptionally hard during her work experience placement. She has predominantly worked alongside the marketing department and contributed to the company’s newsletter. Alongside completing assigned tasks from the company, she has, on the company’s request, vlogged her experience for other students in other schools,”

The Careers Team would like to thank all workplaces that offered placements to our students. We appreciate you giving them invaluable experiences that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. We would also like to say a huge well done to the Year 10 students who truly immersed themselves in their respective roles and made KWS proud!

Library update

This week in the library we have focused on Refugee Week, displaying books to help students learn about and read stories from people who have experienced displacement. Refugee Week is the world’s largest arts and culture festival celebrating the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary. Established in 1998 in the UK, this annual festival aligns with World Refugee Day, celebrated globally on June 20th.
Through an exciting programme of events, activities and media campaigns, Refugee Week brings together people from different backgrounds to connect and foster a deeper understanding of why people are displaced, and the challenges they face when seeking safety. See the website for more information and to take part:

Library update – Pride Month display

Welcome back to the last half of the summer term from the KWS library! To celebrate Pride Month, we have a display of books for all to enjoy and learn about acceptance, equality and the history of Pride Month which is celebrated in June due to the important protests that took place in the US in June 1969. Today, Pride is a celebration of people coming together in love and friendship, to show how far LGBTQ+ rights have come but there is still more to be done.

KWS Mock Election 2024

This summer, election fever is gripping the nation, and things are no different at KWS!  For a bit of fun, and to ensure our students get to experience British democracy themselves, in real time, KWS will hold a mock election.  Over the coming days we will invite students to take part and run election campaigns – if your child would like to represent a party, they should speak to Mr Bowsher (Head of History, room 161) by Monday 17th June with their team, and the name of their party.  They can choose any existing party, or even create their own if they wish.  Only parties that students create, or represent, will be on the ballot paper.

With the help of Mr Bowsher, the students will then come up with a campaign, make posters and record two speeches to be shown to form groups.  There will also be a live speech at the celebration assembly on Friday 21st June.  To teach our students about the first past the post system, each form will be a constituency.  The students will vote in their form groups, the winning party will be the one with the most forms (staff will not vote).  The vote will take place on Thursday 4th July, with the results announced during Friday 5th July’s celebration assembly.

As with everything we do in KWS, the 3Rs of Ready, Responsible and Respectful will be at the heart of this election.  By taking part, students will be ready for adult life, responsible whilst voting or running an effective campaign, and respectful in the way they interact with the different parties, the electorate, and the candidates.

Refugee Week

The 17th of June marks the start of Refugee Week in the U.K. this year. We were recently very fortunate to have guest speakers Laura come in to speak to our Year 10’s from Herts for Refugees and Charlie with his four legged friend Fowzy representing Mobile Refugee Support. They talked about the vital humanitarian work they are supporting with across Europe and more locally supporting Ukrainian refugees in Harpenden and Wheathamstead. The stigmatisation of refugees and asylum seekers was also exemplified in the presentation whilst examining some of the brutality some refugees face whilst in desperate circumstances facing life or death.
Jeremy Bottrill, our contact from Markyate Church who has also been working with refugees in Hertfordshire spoke about the ongoing support his Church team have been offering to refugees who do not have access to a kitchen while in temporary hotel accommodation. We also learnt about local initiatives where these refugees have been keen to support their new local village such as litter picking while they wait for their paperwork to process.
We were also reminded about the comforts we have at home that we take for granted and one question posed at the start was: “if you had to suddenly leave your home in the middle of the night because of a war breaking out in your city, what items would you grab to stuff into a backpack and flee for your safety?” What would you choose, your favourite trainers, maybe your childhood photos? Your passport and food as you won’t know when you will next eat? How about your bank card – just in case you need to empty out your savings account to pay a smuggler to help you and your family cross a dangerous border which upon arriving you may find out you have been left stranded by your smuggler (who promised you a safe crossing).. and now you and your family are left dumped penniless at the border of a country where you don’t speak the language, don’t know anybody and are facing brutality by the local police.
This is a harsh reality for many refugees who wish for nothing but safety for their children and families. All they want is to be in a safe place where they can receive an education and make a life for themselves, to contribute to society and give their skillset to the local economy.
Some of the most famous refugees in Britain include singer Rita Ora whose parents fled war in Kosovo, Freddie Mercury who fled Zanzibar before helping to establish the band Queen and also sports legend Mo Farah who won gold for Team GB at the Olympics after escaping wars in Somalia/Djibouti in the early 90’s. All of these people went on to make significant contributions to British society to showcase on a global platform.
Keeping in mind our KWS values of Knowledge Wellbeing and Success, in the build up to Refugee Week, let’s increase our Knowledge of other people’s struggles and extend our empathy to them, ensuring everyone’s Wellbeing is met in order to make a more Successful society around us for all. We don’t know what someone might have gone through to get to where they are today, but we do know by helping them reach their potential we are a part of a wider success story that will benefit all.
Thank you again to Laura, Charlie and Jeremy for their time in educating us about the misconceptions that many of us hold about refugees and for allowing us a platform to ask questions we had.
Best wishes,
Miss Annie
