University of Hertfordshire Trip

July 14, 2023/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick
A group of y10 students had a great time at the University of Hertfordshire at an event run by Advance Mathematics Support Program. There were several speakers including Ben Sparks whose topic for discussion was ‘where do numbers come from?’ They had the chance to mix and problem solve with other students from Hertfordshire schools. The highlight was building their very own tesseract.

Escape Room Trip

July 14, 2023/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick

clueQuest

In Activities Week, 60 year 10 students visited the clueQuest Escape Rooms in Islington, London.  The escape rooms are themed on Mr. Q’s spy agency and participants take on the role of secret agents tasked with a variety of missions.  For example, in one room, students must identify the double agent, prove that the evil Professor BlackSheep is behind the disappearance of fellow agents and achieve all of that before a security device detonates the agency’s entire facility.

We were impressed with the way students worked together, helping and encouraging each other to find clues, solve puzzles and ultimately escape from the rooms.  There were a number of successfully completed missions and fortunately no one got locked in and left behind!

When students were not in the escape rooms, they were able to participate in Agent Training challenges and “choose your own adventure” table top games.  It was a busy day which the students seemed to really enjoy and we look forward to visiting clueQuest again next year.

Transition Day 2023

July 14, 2023/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

Thursday 6th July saw the final Transition event held at KWS for our new Year 7 students. Thank you to all staff who helped make it a success. I am sure it will be a day to remember for all 186 of our new students coming from a mammoth 32 different primary schools. Both Mr Jones and I have spent the last 7 weeks gathering information and planning the Transition Programme in order to prepare both our staff and new students for a successful, happy and smooth start to life at KWS.

Miss Annie,

KWS Library Something Summer Reading Challenge

July 14, 2023/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

This summer, KWS Library would love all students to take part in our Something Summer Reading Challenge. Students are asked to read Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed and Something Blue and to either email us a review of anything they read on library@kwschool.co.uk or post it on Instagram @kwschoollibrary and tag us in. They can complete just one category or as many as they would like! Each review submitted will give the student an entry ticket into a raffle with some great prizes to win including £25 to spend at Waterstones. The more reviews submitted, the more chance there is to win!

Please also follow us on Instagram or Twitter @kwschoollibrary to see the reviews submitted and for general library news and excitement.

Year 10 Macbeth Performance

June 30, 2023/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick
On Monday we welcomed our wonderful Year 10 students back from Work Experience with a one-man performance of Macbeth. This is a key GCSE text that we will be studying early in Year 11 and as Shakespeare is famously complex we thought it would be good to get an idea of the play in a fun and engaging way.
Anthony Glenn was incredible, bringing enough energy even for a whole year group of year 10 students first thing on a Monday morning and recruiting some fantastic helpers in the shape of Michael S, Cameron P and Jahleel M in particular.
We asked for student feedback to gauge how useful they found it and I’m pleased to report that between 65 and 80% of student respondents said that they found the performance improved their understanding of the plot and the characters and more than 80% said that they enjoyed it.
We asked for a contribution of £4.50 from parents to cover the cost, so if you haven’t paid yet, please could you do so on IPayImpact as soon as possible. Your contribution is important to keep opportunities like this open to all. I hope that you will agree that it was very worthwhile.

Miss Mountford and Mr Alexander are very proud of all students who have committed and improved week after week. Lots of the students have tried new events and run, jumped and thrown some impressive times and distances.

Well done to Daniel W, Liam S-B, Aaron N and Theo B in Year 9 stepping into events with guts and determination, as well as Mia and Thea in Year 10 for rushing from work experience to participate well too!

Some other stand-out performances included:

CEO of Tesco Talk with Year 10s

June 16, 2023/in Whole School/by Keris McCormick
We were fortunate to be visited by Jason Tarry, CEO for Tesco UK Operations to talk about his career path and the variety of opportunities at Tesco. All Year 10 students attended this event, which was fantastically run as a Q&A by our Head students. Students heard about Tesco apprenticeships, work ethic, sustainability at Tesco, and diversity, amongst many other things. The key message was to take every opportunity given to you, starting with making the most of your work experience.
Students and staff attending the event really enjoyed listening to Jason and asked him some fantastic questions, to follow up on the information given. We hope to have Jason return to us at a later date to talk to students in other year groups.
