The past two weeks have seen our Year 11 students navigate their crucial mock examination fortnight, and we are absolutely delighted with their efforts and the mature way they approached this significant challenge.
We want to extend a huge congratulations on your exemplary conduct throughout the exam period. The atmosphere in the exam halls was one of serious focus and silent determination. It takes discipline to sustain concentration over so many different papers, and you all handled it brilliantly. This level of maturity shows you are well on your way to being ready for the main exams in the summer.
A special mention must also go to your presentation. Maintaining high standards of school uniform during such a stressful period demonstrates your respect for the school environment and your commitment to doing your best. You looked smart, professional, and ready for business every day – well done!
These mocks were an essential stepping stone, giving you invaluable practice and feedback. Now that the papers are over, the real work of reflection and improvement begins.
We are incredibly proud of your hard work and positive approach. Keep focusing on that final goal, and remember that your teachers are here to support you every step of the way.
Onwards and upwards, Year 11!
It’s been a very exciting week in the library for our year 7 students. At the start of their journey with us they were all gifted a copy of Lesley Parr’s book, Fallout, to read as a whole year group. And this week we were very lucky to have Lesley come and visit us! She talked to all the students in year 7 about the writing and publishing process, and about how the artwork for the cover was selected. The students were very engaged, and hopefully they gained a deeper connection with the book as a result.
She also ran writing workshops for the students who had entered the challenges associated with the book, over the summer holidays.
Congratulations to the following students who were gifted a copy of another of Lesley Parr’s books for winning the challenges:
Chloe J (best chant poster)
Finley C (best film poster)
Jenson P (most extreme reading photo)
Fares T (best book review)
This week in the library we are also displaying our collection of books about the important role women had in World War 2 as part of the Remembrance Day commemorations, along with our most engaging non-fiction books to support Non-Fiction November, an initiative being supported and promoted by The National Literacy Trust. This initiative aims to provide young people with the opportunity to explore non-fiction texts, which research shows plays a vital role in helping them to learn about the world around them. We’re also promoting our books on bullying, in support of anti-bullying week. We have books to support you if you feel you are being bullied, if you witness bullying or you suspect someone you know is struggling with bullying. Feel free to drop in and pick up one of our easily accessible texts.
On Monday, the KWS Debating Team participated in an excellent event hosted by St George’s, engaging in five debates – one junior, two intermediate, and two senior – on a diverse range of topics. Among these were discussions on the sustainability of electric cars, and the extent to which celebrities should have influence in politics. All students did brilliantly, with stand-out performances by Rebecca S in Year 8, and Gabi D and Sophie H in Year 11, who received individual awards too. Well done to all!
Our Year 11 GCSE Business students had a fantastic opportunity to visit the Bank of England this week. The trip provided them with a genuine insight into how the Bank operates, its fascinating history, and the crucial role it plays in managing the UK economy.
Students explored the museum’s interactive displays and participated in discussions about key topics, including inflation, interest rates, and their impact on people and businesses every day. It was a great chance to see how what they learn in class connects to real-world situations.
One student summed it up perfectly: “Being able to experience the history of the Bank and learn a lot about the economic climate helped me understand the links between inflation and interest rates.” – Will R in Year 11
Overall, it was an inspiring and eye-opening day that brought business studies to life, leaving students with a deeper understanding of how the economy really works.

We will be showing two Christmas favourites: Home Alone and Elf! Bring your friends, family, and holiday spirit for a night of fun and classic Christmas vibes.
The Year 7 Students recently returned from an exhilarating and highly successful residential trip to Manor Adventure, and we couldn’t be prouder of the resilience, teamwork, and sheer enthusiasm they displayed throughout the trip.
The students were faced with a packed itinerary of challenging outdoor activities, designed to test their comfort zones and encourage collaboration. From the moment they arrived, they embraced every opportunity with a fantastic ‘can-do’ attitude, demonstrating maturity beyond their years.
The true highlight of the trip was watching the students rise magnificently to every physical and mental challenge presented to them.
Vertical Heights: The Climbing Walls saw nervous anticipation turn into triumphant cheers as pupils pushed past their perceived limits, with many reaching the very top!
Water Warriors: On the water, students learned to manoeuvre in sync during Canoeing and Kayaking; many who started out hesitantly ended the session paddling confidently.
Underground Explorers: The Caving Activity was a brilliant lesson in trust and communication. Navigating the dark, tight spaces required pupils to guide and encourage each other, proving they could face their fears head-on.
Teamwork Triumphs: The Obstacle Course and Low Ropes sessions were a masterclass in teamwork. They quickly realised that these tasks were impossible to complete alone, relying on strategy, encouragement, and physical support from their peers to succeed.
Student Voices: The Verdict is In!The best feedback comes directly from the Students themselves. We were delighted by the positive response to the week, perfectly summed up by the following students:
‘Incredible trip. I was never bored and all the activities were an amazing experience and I am really glad I did it.’ James S
‘I had the best getaway with friends!’ Anna W
‘It was brilliant, I loved and enjoyed every single one of the activities.’ Devan P
‘I loved the caving, and the way the instructors all made sure we had the best time.’ Felicity R
‘My favourite thing about Manor was the climbing wall, it was really fun and the instructors were very nice.’ Hannah C
A huge thank you must go to all the teachers and support staff who attended the residential. Your energy, encouragement, and willingness to participate alongside the students truly made this a memorable and successful experience for Year 7.
Beyond the adrenaline rush, the pupils gained invaluable transferable skills. They developed stronger communication, built genuine trust in their classmates, and discovered a new level of self-belief.
A huge well done once again to all the pupils for their outstanding behaviour, positive attitude, and for truly embodying the school spirit. They didn’t just attend the trip; they conquered it!
On Tuesday 11th November, Mr Bowsher (Head of History) and Mr Laing (Head of Sixth Form), accompanied by the KWS History Subject Ambassadors (Mia T, Ethan H, Jessica H and Sam J B), represented the school at the annual Remembrance Day service in Harpenden town centre. They joined members of the local community to pay their respects and to observe the traditional two-minute silence in honour of those who gave their lives in service to their country.
Congratulations to our Year 13 students who have started submitting their UCAS applications! We are thrilled to see so many students applying for exciting and aspirational courses at a wide range of prestigious universities.
Those applying to Oxbridge and for dentistry have already had their applications submitted, with the final deadline for all applications at the end of November.
Good luck to all Year 13s as they continue this important step towards their future!
