A Lava-ly Time in Italy: Our School Trip to Naples & Capri!
What an amazing experience our year 9 and 10 Geography (and one Historian!) students had on their recent enrichment week trip to Naples. This four-day adventure was packed with incredible archaeological wonders, breath-taking coastal landscapes, and unforgettable moments, giving our students a first-hand look at the powerful geography and geological forces shaping this stunning part of Italy.
Our journey began bright and early with a flight to Naples International Airport from Luton Airport. Upon arrival, we wasted no time diving into Italy’s fascinating history. One of the highlights of our first afternoon was visiting the incredible Lapis Museum. This excursion took us deep underground, where we explored ancient Roman cisterns and a labyrinth of subterranean tunnels that later served as air-raid shelters during World War II. Next, we embarked on a vibrant Urban Walking Tour of Naples’ historic streets. Students had a chance to soak up the brilliant local culture, see the city’s unique architecture, and spending enough money in the Napoli club shop, that they will be able to afford another Scott McTominay! Once finished, we headed to our hostel in Sorrento for dinner and a relaxing evening.
Day two took us away from the city chaos and out to the stunning island of Capri, a region famous for its dramatic coastal scenery. Our morning started with a bus ride to Marina Piccola Harbour in Sorrento, where we caught a scenic ferry across the bay, with staff and students alike enjoying the cool breeze of the journey. To kick off our island adventure, we hopped aboard a Laser Capri boat trip, cruising right alongside towering sea cliffs and the famous Faraglioni rock formations to study coastal erosion up close. After a rest break and possibly the most amazing focaccia sandwiches ever, we took the funicular railway up to the main square for lunch and a refreshing drink. After lunch, we hiked out to the Arco Naturale – a breath-taking, 12-meter-tall natural limestone arch spanning the cliffs. Students were then given plenty of free time to explore the island in small groups, sample some local snacks, and do some souvenir shopping. Once back, we headed to a famous gelato parlour and enjoyed the most amazing lemon sorbet, a deserved treat after such a hectic day!
Our third day was arguably our most anticipated, ready for an epic double-feature of geological history and volcanology. We spent the morning exploring the sprawling, world-famous ruins of the Pompeii Archaeological Park. Walking through ancient Roman streets, homes, and marketplaces frozen in time by the catastrophic eruption of 79 AD was a profoundly moving and immersive experience for everyone. After a fantastic lunch break enjoying authentic pizza and refuelling with lots of water, we headed up to Mount Vesuvius National Park. Students hiked right up to the crater of the active volcano, looking down into the massive caldera and taking in panoramic views of the Bay of Naples below. It was a powerful reminder of Earth’s dynamic and destructive nature and possibly the highlight of the trip.
On the fourth day, we focused on the volatile volcanic landscape west of Naples and further Roman engineering marvels. We headed to the fascinating Phlegrean Fields, a massive underground super-volcano area. Seeing the steaming sulfur vents and bubbling earth gave everyone a vivid, first-hand geography lesson. From there, we visited the majestic Flavian Amphitheatre – one of the largest Roman arenas in existence – where we got to walk through the subterranean chambers where gladiators once waited. After pretending to be Russell Crowe, we enjoyed another long lunch break and more deserved pizza and gelato!
With tired feet and packed bags, passports in hand, we headed back to the airport for our journey home. This trip was an incredible success, providing our students with invaluable educational experiences and memories that will last a lifetime. A massive thank you to all the students for their enthusiasm and conduct, and to all the staff (Mr. Timberlake, Mr. Inns, Mrs. Phillips, Mr. Jones, Miss Longstaff and Miss Noe) for making this unforgettable adventure possible!
