Period 7 in full swing

September 27, 2024/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

It has been fabulous to see our Autumn Block of Period 7 already in full swing, there is such a buzz if you walk around the school during it – so much to see and so many smiles!

We have new options including football skills, girls football, video game maker and table tennis which are proving to be huge hit.  Lots of the old favourites continue to be popular – DofE Skills, Puzzles, Chess and Gardening to name just a few.   A key difference this year is having a 6th form and its  fantastic to see our Year 12s getting involved in sessions, supporting younger students to do and learn more.

Our Year 11s intervention has started too, with the small group sessions proving to be really productive on Tuesday and Wednesdays,  whilst other students have more time for independent study ahead of their November mocks. Year 10 have begun to focus on Careers, Community and Study Skills every Tuesday during Period 7.

Staff Book Club

September 27, 2024/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

Staff Book Club

Staff agree on a book to read and arrange to meet up in our school library during home learning club once a half term to discuss it; this allows students to see us as reading role models and it benefits our wellbeing too

Everyone has their own perspective so the discussions are varied and interesting

Over the summer holidays we read:

Penance by Eliza Clark

There was divided opinion over this book, with some staff really enjoying it and other staff not liking it.

The book is written from the perspective of a journalist who is writing about the murder of a school girl 10 years ago by her peers. It includes various writing styles: interviews, blogs etc…The book did make us wonder if it was based on a real case, but it wasn’t.

Our current read is –

Standard deviation by Katherine Heiny

KWS Sports News

September 27, 2024/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

Thank you very much to the massive majority that have ensured they have a pair of plastic studded boots for the new term and brought them to PE lessons. It hugely helps with the efficiency of starting a lesson.

Congratulations to our cross country teams over the last few weeks. Some amazing commitment and strong performances all round. Well done to the junior boys who all finished in the top 10, with Lucas finishing 3rd, Thomas 7th and Harris 9th.

Moving onto football, our U15 girls had a very positive game versus the Priory School. An unfortunate 3-1 loss but so much improvement throughout the game and a great team effort. The goalscorer on the day was Alice T and she was also identified as the Player of the Match.

Finally, it was fantastic to have our first set of rugby fixtures of the season last weekend against St Columba’s, including our first ever game hosted at KWS! A high number of hugely encouraging performances from all but especially dominant displays from Years 7 and 9. Well done to all involved.

Sixth Form Opening

September 27, 2024/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

We are delighted to announce the successful opening of our Sixth Form to our Year 12 students, who have made an excellent start to their studies. We have also been excited to welcome many students from other schools to become part of our school community. Students in Year 12 are already proving to be outstanding role models for the younger students and are embracing the many privileges of Sixth Form life, including access to the exclusive Sixth Form area and Sixth Form catering. To support their journey, we are utilising the VESPA platform and Unifrog, which provide valuable tools to help them achieve their full potential. We look forward to seeing all that they will accomplish in the coming months and are excited about the bright futures ahead of them.

PE News

September 13, 2024/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

Welcome back to the new academic year in PE. Just a reminder to please ensure your child has a pair of plastic studded boots, a gum shield and shin pads for the new term and they bring them to PE lessons.

There is no rugby training this Saturday due to Open Day. All lunchtime and after school sports clubs start from Monday. The final sports club timetable can be found as an attachment to this article.

Moving onto sporting fixtures, the cross country season is already well underway. Well done to the Year 7 students who took part in the district MOB race on Tuesday. Stand out performances from Freddie S and Violet S who both finished 9th in their respective races. Similarly, there was a great effort from our cross country team at Townsend School on Thursday.  Some fantastic performances across all age groups, but in particular, Luca W and Thomas B finished 3rd and 7th in the Junior Boys group. Thank you very much to Miss Mountford for her hard work in supporting the organisation of these two fixtures.

September 13, 2024/in Whole School/by Chrissy Dicks

Welcome to the new school year everyone and welcome back to the library!

We have had a very busy start to the year with many new students visiting the library at break and lunch. We’ve also had Year 7 library induction classes this week to show Year 7 the library and how to use the brilliant resources we have here. Here is some information about borrowing from the library and our Year 7 & 8 bingo reading challenge.

Reading Challenge for Year 7 and 8

All Year 7 and 8 students will be completing our library reading challenge! It will be a fun competition where you can earn recognitions and win prizes! (See picture below for the bingo sheet, it is being given to students in their library lessons).

Borrowing library books

Students can:

  • Borrow a maximum of 4 books at a time
  • For 2 weeks
  • Renew books by visiting the library or renewing books online
  • Return books by handing them in at the library desk or putting them in the book returns box

Elibrary

This is a brief description of how to use the online KWS library, more details are given in library lessons and can be found online via the KWS library tab on your chromebook menu where there are links to:

  • Accessit – our online library catalogue
  • ePlatform, the place to borrow ebooks and audiobooks.

Accessit – our online library catalogue

You need to log-in with your school login details by clicking the ‘SSO’ button at the top right of the screen. This will bring up your dashboard. Attendance Rewards, Review & Absence Reporting Procedures

September 10, 2024/in News/by Chrissy Dicks

Attendance Rewards, Review & Absence Reporting Procedures

As a school, we place great importance on attendance and expect that all our students will achieve an attendance level of at least 96% each academic year. Parents have a legal responsibility to ensure their child attends school regularly and punctually.

Any student with an attendance figure below 90% is defined nationally as a persistent absentee. This equates to just over 3 days of absence per half term and applies if the absence is authorised or unauthorised. If a student were to get a score of 90% on a maths test this would be very good. If, however, a student’s attendance is 90% over their five years of compulsory school age, from Year 7 to 11, this equates to missing half a year of school, which is detrimental to any individual, regardless of their academic ability.

There is a strong statistical link between attendance and attainment. Studies show that students with the highest attainment in their GCSE exams, at the end of Year 11, have higher rates of attendance over Years 10 and 11, compared to those with the lowest attainment.

We review attendance regularly and have an attendance procedure we follow based on each student’s attendance percentage. The attendance leaflet which is attached to this email provides important information regarding our attendance procedure.

We strongly advise parents/carers to avoid booking holidays during term time. We appreciate there may be exceptional circumstances behind a request for leave. If this is the case, you should give a detailed explanation as to why it is necessary for you to take your child out of school by completing the form on the attendance page of the school website and send it to absence@kwschool.co.uk where it will be forwarded to Mr Martin for his consideration.

Rewarding Excellent Attendance

Students who attain 100% attendance every half term will receive a personalised email from the Headteacher, and if they achieve 100% in a whole term, they will have their name entered into a prize draw which takes place at the end of the year. The more terms that a student attends without absence, the more entries they have in the draw which increases their chances in the draw. In July, prizes included Amazon vouchers ranging from £50, £25, £10 & £5.

By working together, we can help students reach their full potential and make the most of the opportunities school has to offer. If you feel you would like support with your child’s attendance or well-being, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Absence Reporting

If your child is unable to attend school due to illness, urgent appointments or other reasons please use the Arbor Parent Portal App (instructions shown below), telephone the 24hr school absence line on 01582 314800 or email absence@kwschool.co.uk by 8.30am at the latest, on the first day of absence and every subsequent day thereafter.

  • Please provide your child’s name and tutor group
  • Please give as much detail as possible for the reason of absence avoiding using terms such as ‘unwell’ or ‘under the weather’
  • If you fail to contact the school to inform us of your child’s absence, this will be referred to our safeguarding team who may consider it is appropriate to complete a safe and well check

Reporting absences though the Arbor Parent Portal App – Our preferred choice which is quick and easy for you!

It is now possible to report absences quickly and easily using the Arbor parent portal app.

Go to the home page of the Arbor app, click on the orange Quick Actions tab, click attendance, and on the right-hand side you will see a green box, click ‘Log Absence’.

You can input a start and end time for the absence and type in the reason for the absence.

By default, the absence start and end times reflect the student’s full day, but these can be adjusted as needed. Once you have filled in this data, click ‘Log Absence’ and this will be visible to the school attendance team.

Please note that informing the school is a key responsibility of parents/carers. When staff from both the attendance and safeguarding team take time out of their day to chase families, it detracts from the support we can offer to students in school. Therefore, please ensure all reports are made by 8.30am.

Where possible, please give plenty of notice for any planned absence, for example hospital appointments by using the Arbor parent portal app or emailing absence@kwschool.co.uk.
