Year 10 Macbeth Performance

On Monday we welcomed our wonderful Year 10 students back from Work Experience with a one-man performance of Macbeth. This is a key GCSE text that we will be studying early in Year 11 and as Shakespeare is famously complex we thought it would be good to get an idea of the play in a fun and engaging way.
Anthony Glenn was incredible, bringing enough energy even for a whole year group of year 10 students first thing on a Monday morning and recruiting some fantastic helpers in the shape of Michael S, Cameron P and Jahleel M in particular.
We asked for student feedback to gauge how useful they found it and I’m pleased to report that between 65 and 80% of student respondents said that they found the performance improved their understanding of the plot and the characters and more than 80% said that they enjoyed it.
We asked for a contribution of £4.50 from parents to cover the cost, so if you haven’t paid yet, please could you do so on IPayImpact as soon as possible. Your contribution is important to keep opportunities like this open to all. I hope that you will agree that it was very worthwhile.

Work Experience Report

Students in Year 10 participated in a week’s work experience from 12th-16th June, with the majority of students organising their own placements, and the remainder being allocated placements from a database of workplaces. The week was a huge success, with positive feedback coming from the students, employers and staff visiting the students on the placements. Some quotes from the employers included, “The students were engaged, polite, willing to learn and took direction well. They have set the bar high for the next school!”, “We absolutely LOVED having this student and will be sad to see him leave!”, and “We couldn’t have asked for a better student – they were a credit to KWS!”

Although students were very tired at the end of the week, many reported developing employability skills, growing in confidence and learning new skills, specific to the role and workplace they were in. For many, this experience has cemented their hopes for the future and has raised their aspirations, with a number of students already researching the possible pathways into employment.

The following students were commended for their outstanding contribution to the workplace, either by the employer, or by the member of staff visiting them:

Jahleel M – Fusion Pre-School

Michael S – James Ayres Flooring

Riley S – Warner Bros. Studios

Amelie G – St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School, Chesterfield

Martha H – Gascoyne Estates Ltd

Chimdindu I – Tesco Express

Reuben E – Luke Garlick Make and Mend

Maisy H and Elise S – Flamstead Pre-school

Andrea C – St Luke’s School

Lexi A – Vache Bleue Galleries

Finally, the following students impressed so much that they have been offered opportunities for employment in the future!

Jasleen N – Boots

George GW – Mango Electricals

Taye L – The Entertainer

Well done to all students that had a successful placement and thank you to all employers that offered our students placements.

CEO of Tesco Talk with Year 10s

We were fortunate to be visited by Jason Tarry, CEO for Tesco UK Operations to talk about his career path and the variety of opportunities at Tesco. All Year 10 students attended this event, which was fantastically run as a Q&A by our Head students. Students heard about Tesco apprenticeships, work ethic, sustainability at Tesco, and diversity, amongst many other things. The key message was to take every opportunity given to you, starting with making the most of your work experience.
Students and staff attending the event really enjoyed listening to Jason and asked him some fantastic questions, to follow up on the information given. We hope to have Jason return to us at a later date to talk to students in other year groups.
